Let's hope they're not gold fossickers...

LATEST: Waikato police have spent the day recovering the bodies of two men found in an abandoned mine west of Whitianga in the Coromandel Peninsula.

Police officers in white boiler suits could be seen climbing through dense scrub beside the road in order to get to the bodies.

Police declined to discuss the investigation into the pair's death, only to say the bodies will be taken to Thames where family members will formally identify them.

The men's names and ages have not been released and officers also declined to comment on why the pair were in the mine, which is along the 309 Rd.

An autopsy will be carried out in Auckland tomorrow to identify how the men died.

I dont think they will be gold fossickers/miners. There will be a few missing persons cases held by the Police who they will probably find down some of those mining shafts. Lots of forgotten about shafts and lots of missing people unfortunately.

Sounds like they were using the drive to cook up P, probably passed out from the fumes. The only mine I've been into / seen on the edge of the 309 was just a exploratory drive not a worked one.

For fossicking the mines around there aren't worth it, they can be very dangerous to enter and they were abandoned for a reason (quartz veins ran out etc). But the tailings outside the mine drive entrances especially the older ones do contain minerals and have a good potential of gold.
