Hey fellow fossicking and prospectors alike. i am going to sneak into your paradise for a couple of days in the middle of Oct., and try my luck around the Coromandel area. Would anyone like to share any information on where i need to obtain a one day permit if there is such a thing or where i can submit an application for recreational fossicking permit. Is there such thing? And would anyone like to meet up with me and the miss's? Maybe your ol' lady would let you out if there is another woman to kick back and relax with. Or am i shooting for the wrong area? I'm open to suggestions, but let's keep it clean :)

Gidday Yank,

No permits required. As long as you are just using a pan or little sluice box, nobody is going to get too upset if you have a play in one of the creeks up here. There is very little alluvial gold on the Coromandel and it is hard to find. You may wish to just enjoy the other features of the place. If you are going to the South Island, there are a number of places where you will find it far easier to get a speck or two in your pan.

Talking about pans, I am not aware of any place in the North Island where you can get them.

Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy our little piece of Godzone.

You can sometime find gold pans in the North Island in army surplus stores. Just for your info. Reccomend the South Island too for fossicking.

That's not correct.

The ONLY place in New Zealand you can LEGALLY pan for gold without a mining/exploration permit is in one of the South Island "public fossicking areas" http://www.nzpam.govt.nz...minerals/gold-fossicking OR on someone's claim WITH THEIR PERMISSION.

There are no one-day permits unfortunately.

Sure, you can wander up a creek somewhere with a pan and it's likely no one will complain BUT it is illegal and if you bump into the wrong person your lovely NZ holiday could turn into a disaster.

My recommendation would be for you to make sure Queenstown is added to your itinerary!
