Hi element , have been to dicksmiths and purchased cameras for claim, hope to have up and going soon , if not this weekend even, this poaching matter will hopefully cease soon one way or the other , jd still owe you a debt of gratitude ( canoe ) and would like to catch up sometime ,overdog for myself personally its not fossickers ( cant speak for my claim partner ) that have me fired up but the -------- dredger raping my/our piece of paradise, we did share a joke today about catching the said culprit , I assume you have all seen the film Delivrance.
if it was someone stealing my Tv and I was arriving home , probably just run them over and claim insurance on Tv if you get my drift

i think a poacher would prefer to be hung from a tree than have to deal with prosecution via DOC.

I detest poachers and yet feel awful sorry for the common man as this country of bureaucracy, red tape and Gestapo tactics by mini Hitlers is not 'Godzone' anymore and is merely politically geared toward looking after the 'Big Operators' and corporate businesses.

I think that many of these people are inherently reasonably decent but simply havent the foggiest how to go about getting a claim and simply cannot afford the costs - if people could go mining or fossicking throughout State land using hand held non motorized means and could get a small claim say not exceeding ten hectares for a nominal fee including inspections and consents then the average Kiwi would be far more honest in his mining and would follow the procedures.

They are forced into dishonesty and suterfuge tactics by a corrupt and dishonest government and at the cost of the honest claim holders and land owners whether they be Private landowners or the State estate.

In many cases it is not a case of hanging the poachers but hanging the government until better laws for all without prejudice are put in place so that those who cannot afford the exorbitant costs of a claim and dont know how to go about getting one have somewhere to go with minimum hassle

Maybe the big boys need to supply a river just for the motorised and or detecting ,you pay a small fee registering your details so you clean up as you go , you are liable for the piece of river you have claimed they can check the river at anytime to make sure you are just a hobbiest and dont have diggers ect there, hay thats somthing the normal fella can afford then jd

I dont know about 'A river" but the idea has heaps of merit and it should include many rivers - a length on the Shotover, on the Kawarau, on the Arrow, and in all of the gold mining areas lengths of river should be set aside - the trouble is that the miners have not ever banded together to forma force worthy of reckoning with so that their elected representatives have a great deal of say in liaising with both The Department of Constipation and the Government.

Not only that BUT this lobby group needs to have widespread membership and say and for that reason needs numbers - it should be extended into the Outdoor Recreational Lobby Group - so that within the Office Bearers there are three or four hunters, three or four Goldminers and two or three of each of the other outdoor recreation groups - this 'committee' needs to act in cohesion to protect each others rights as one entity and lobby accordingly.

Thy would liaise with other interested parties and follow precisely the charters or principles of these groups, eg Deerstalkers, Colfo, Tramping Clubs - this means that the other groups also benefit form the recreational Gold Fossickers and vice versa - the other organisations also need to be informed of the Gold Fossickers ideals, aims and objectives.

This group could also include conservationalists and environmentalists - all working together for the good and benefit of ALL NEW ZEALANDERS and NOT the big operators...indeed they could work together to fight against New Zealand being exploited, pillaged and plundered by the Large off shore corporations up whos arses the Government crawls. I know that some members in here WANT to see New Zealand sold down the drain and want to see Macraes Gold going into the pockets of the Rothschilds because that is where it goes...but then again it might appear that these people have ulterior motives.

I do agree with Lammerlaw, that in the most part "poachers" have few other options other than to operate outside the "LAW", as far as obtaining a claim goes. Cost and legal obstructions being the main issue. However I would think that the person/s dredging popular rivers/areas would have a very good idea that they are indeed claimed, I for one wouldn't sink 5 to 10 thousand into a dredge, without having an idea where i was going to use it first.
Just my 2cents.

i think at some stage everyone is quilty of poaching to some degree, my first dredge i had i went where ever i wanted with it, at that time tho i was only 17 didnt have internet or a clue about permits etc and most places i went there were always half a dozen other dredgers within a km or on the river. once i found out about permits a only went to unclaimed areas saved up enough money and got decent gear and then started the process of getting a claim for myself.
There are quite a few new claims out there that people have just gone ahead and got and they dont even have any gear to work it with i think youve gota have descent gear if youre gona have a claim, no point spending thousands if youre just gona work it with junk gear that spits most of the gold out the back or has crap suction and youve gota push the gravel up the nozzle!!
as for the sugestion lammerlaw made about a stretch of river in each area set aside for people without claims it is a good and simple idea in theaory and would be good to see, but i dont think youll get claim owners to give up there hard won ground to people who want something for nothing. Also there are people now who ruin it for others in the few designated fossicking areas just think what idiots will ruin it for everyone if there is a public dredging area.
It may minimise the poaching problem for a while but what happens when they are no longer satisfied with the designated areas and want better gold... back to poaching they will go. As stated earlier in the thread it is BS that all the good gold bearing areas are claimed if this was true then there wouldnt be so many areas still getting claimed. it just needs to be made easier to obtain a claim. you mite see claims on trademe for 30 or 40 grand and think rip off but if its fully set up mp/ consents/ linz or doc access in place and it has gold well its probably a fair price and money well spent.

Some people are quite lazy and cant be bothered thinking for themselves, find it easier riding coat tails, sucking what they can out of you for info and then digging out your wee spot that you have been methodical in working... I will admit to poaching...but only from areas held by monster corporates, any river claims I am very aware of and do not go near without permission, some of the river claims if you look into it are held by companies that are just trying to be agents, like buying a $2000 car and selling it for $5000.

there are already public areas set aside for hand working methods, public areas for dredging would have to resolve public liability and H & S issues etc, but this isnt impossible, just means that the area has to be managed like a business, which may not be what people would be expecting to comply with. As you know our government dept and local authorities people dont like accepting responsibility, just large salaries, so it will probably fall back to a claim holder to set up a business of this nature.

An alternative to all this is obviously to work someone elses claim on tribute, and perhaps this is what people who want to dredge should explore more, I know one claim owner that was doing this last summer. It may take some effort to set up, but would still be less effort than getting your own claim.

Something with the clout the NRA have in the USA. Those guys yell JUMP and the politicians ask "how high".

oroplata - yes you have got the idea - the NRA have indeed got a lot of clout - Actually Charlton Heston, the Actor, whos most famous words were "They will have to prize my gun from my dead cold hands" or something along those lines was the president of the NRA but he is dead at the moment so I assume they have another president...they also have a bloody good firearms museum. That museum even has a gun form the Mayflower although it might have had three new barrels and five new stocks since it arrived in the Americas in 1620 I think it was.

I wonder if they did have to prize his guns form his dead cold hands?

heres an idea,we all on pay dirt chip in a little money and pick a spot to claim, once its claimed anyone who chipped in can drop a dredge in any where on it be it your own dredge or a rented one(we may have a 4inch keene with all the bell n whistle up for hire soon)and new people on pay dirt when they register have to pay a fee or not be aloud to dredge it,and every year pay a small amount to service the claim ect(only cost about 500 per year to crown minerals),it would work but take a wee bit of sorting it out, then that would stop most of the poaching and stuff going on and then everyone can have a go at dredging for gold, just an idea.

or if there is people out there keen on chipping in on a claim somewhere i know 3 people including me that would put in for another one

thanks

Good idea that man- I for one would be interested in both of those ideas.
You might have to put claims on in a few different areas tho-marlborough,west coast etc and that might get expensive and time consuming but it may very well go some way to cutting back on the poaching issue...

Even though new to this game , I had considered the mangles claim that was resently sold on tradesme for a similar idea with members based on overseas prospecting clubs , Basically lost out due to my own indecision after poaching issues on present claims as I have posted, although pissed off , I too would be interested reaching into my pockets element111 / jd

I reckon its a recipe for distaster....look at what happend over in the state,s ie...BAN ! some strechs of river over there have a dozen + dredgers all parked up in 1 small area.
imagine if that was here in NZ the greenies/doc and so on....GAME OVER.
