hey guys ive been coin detecting for a couple of months now and havin a ball. found a couple of nice gold rings but i'm real keen to hit some gold nuggets.
im headin to some private land up the maruia river. i realy need some advice on where i should be swingin my coil. theres the maruia river itself
with mostly large shingle beaches. then theres a small creek with finer shingle and the odd rock slab jutting out into the creek itself. wat should i be looking for and if my coil piks up a nugget wats the best way to get it up. digging or panning? as you can see im greener than a green thing on
this gold huntin but im headin up there in two weeks for four days. oh yea and they just had massive flooding that has changed course of both river and creek. as far as i can see theres no claim on this area. any advice would be great. Chris

i have a garret ace150 with an 11" coil and a laffeyette goldseeker with a small coil. the gold seeker is an italain copy of a goldbug 2. piks up crazy small bits of metal down to about 5" deep.

Hi there Chrispy, What detector are you using? If chasing gold then you really need a gold detector as opposed to a coin/relic machine. I wont go in to the reasons why here.
You are best to target exposed bedrock, If your coil is water proof, then bedrock in the water itself is good. Or exposed bed rock outside of the water. If you have an idea of how deep bedrock may be if it has overburden on top of it then you will need a bigger coil to get the better depth but this is very limited on small gold & depending what detector you are using. Hence shallow or exposed bedrock is the best to target. You will need a detector pick or similar to dig & scrape into the bedrock to retrieve any targets.
