Debated wether to post this or not but I've had a beer and the rivers are up so here goes... Anybody else had any strange/unsettling things happen out in the bush?
Ill kick off... Up the Wakamarina there are lots of old tracks and drives-I was fossicking around the Golden Bar reef last year and came across a drive.Torch on and in I went-roof was caved in about 20 metres in but some interesting stuff in there. Was just about to turn round and leave when clear as day I heard a voice say "no" from just behind me.Nobody in the tunnel but me.
I left the drive a damn sight quicker than I went in...
Later found out 3 miners had met a nasty end in there when the roof collapsed.

On another overgrown track I swear to god I heard horses coming towards me-could hear hooves on stone but the track was covered in leaves and mud-no prints either.

Makes you wonder...

You got a nice warning from dead Miners, Visit the place and leave something for spirits...
Bring a small shrine with a Candle and some food.

Crikey overdog that sounds like it would be a bit of an unusual day!
Ive spent many a day up the wakamarina and am yet to hear any voices or experience anything strange.
Sometimes when im swimming through deep gorges in the Waka with not much light in them it can get a bit spooky especially if there are logs and crap in them and its a bit harder to see whats lurking in the cold depths....
Several times have come face to face with rather large eels, my prospecting mate is rather scared of them
although you wouldnt hear him say that haha.
Another mate recons he finds a few of the huts we stay at a bit spooky, nothing solid just a strange feeling he recons.
The above isnt very good but its all ive got haha, keen to hear a few other stories.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

I have stayed in the Howard and have heard other miners talking about strange goings ons in the night, strange noises flying overhead causing pans to rattle off the hut shelves, the noise of old timers walking through the campsite ( The old miners used to walk from the Maud to the Maggie River to work every day).

Sounded spooky but I have never experienced the noises myself.

Interesting - indeed - A friends wife refused to stay in one of my huts because she felt suppressed by the people around her - when she stayed in the house she heard music coming from the other hut - this hut is not however a miners hut.

My wife asked nme once why I spent the entire night walking around the house up at my place - but I wasnt.

Out the back I once clearly saw an old man and a much younger fellow as clear as could be but they took no notice ofme and kept walking then just...disappeared.

Up at the bivouac I had on our claim both my friends and I felt 'something' but then again it is an eerie place at the best of times.

Yes there is a spirit world and there are those who can see or hear or feel the presence of these beings and should they bring you warnings then it pays to take heed.

Hatter-with you on the log thing-for some reason logs in pools give me the screaming willies.Especially if you cant see the bottom...
No idea why,I suppose technically its a phobia-no valid reason for it

Talking to a mate today who used to dredge in the Buller and he said if he spent a night out in the bush he would always keep a candle lit because of some of the things he saw and heard.Wouldnt elaborate tho but hes not one for wild flights of fancy and no he doesnt make moonshine...

Strange noises, interesting, often I walk in and out of places in the middle of the night, I have heard many noises most of which could be explained after thinking about them a bit, having said that I do think that there is a thing like a sixth sense that warns us when we are in danger. Spirits, maybe, either way I'll still carry the 7mm08.

Just reading these reminded me of a time I was up the wilberforce lake coleridge my crazy fox teriour dog, he was my traveling companion, I would always sleep in a hammick tied between two trees and the dog would be tied to the tree below to warn me of anything in the night, the shingle fan with a small run of i think it was macrocarper trees ,I made camp deciding to go to bed a few hours later I awoke in the dark to a set of eyes looking at me, fearing the worst crapping it the fire light just about gone I realised it was opossom managed to pass the dog up the tree and made camp at the end of my sleeping bag, well all hell broke loose when the dog jumped up to see why I was awake put my hart back in my chest and enjoyed the rest of the trip jd

Walking up a local creek about ten years back, about 4 or 5 k's away from where a vehicle could get to. I stopped for a break and sat on a log, rolled a smoke then looked across the creek and thought I could see bare foot prints in the sand. I then had a weird conversation in my head, with an imaginary young, ancient Maori. It was broad daylight, no alcohol or other intoxicating substances consumed. I afterwards knew all I wanted to about that creek and the surrounding area. When I'd finished talking with him, I suddenly noticed I had a bell bird in a bush about a metre away singing very loudly. I didn't notice it arrive, and it was in full song and very loud, when I slowly became aware of it, freaky.
I blew smoke in the four directions, and left a little pinch of tobacco on the log, American Indian style.
I didn't feel threatened at any stage, in fact quite the opposite, as what he communicated was a speech of welcome, and information on where to get various things. Of course I probably either imagined the whole thing, or the Pocket Edition people might have put something strange in my smokes.
There were no bare footprints when I looked closer, but the day had somehow become warmer, with a strange calm, magical quality that I can't truly explain, nor ever forget.
I once told a guy that his imagination had eaten the rest of his brain, and that could have been what happened to me!

Great story Nuggy.
This thread is becoming a bit like Barry Crump's yarns.
I like it.

Love that last line NUGGY, I often wonder why there are so many of these "unexplained" storys out there.
Perhaps we have all been missing something? In any case its food for thought.

Apparently his car was parked at Butchers Flat for 11 days! You would have thought he would have told somebody where he was going...
