the skippers road is now out of action after a section of devil's elbow fell away.

it looks pretty bad.

and will be very costly to fix.

short of blasting a new road i think this may close the run for quite some time.

i really don't know why it doesn't happen more actually.

these old gold roads get a pummelling by the tour operators, although this time it seems unavoidable, just mother nature doing here thing.

although the council gets a bit from them little seems to go back into any of the tracks, with skippers being the only one that really gets the attention it needs, but only when it gets bad.

here's the link:

and a better shot on ODT:

http://www.odt.co.nz/new...-take-chopper-rather-car

from this shot its not so bad - will be rebuilt up like the last slip i presume.

if it was the old days they would already have work started. have to consult the hysterical people, prob some consents too.

oroplata: exactly.

i think the locals that operate tourism stuff and live in there are well and truly aware of that and i presume already onto.

i remember when they diverted the shotover at deep creek a couple of summers back. the deep creek outlet got hit hard.

jw:

yeah, well, won't be able to get in there for the spring and maybe some of summer. i'm glad there are tour operators that operate in there to put pressure on to get it fixed quick.

further to the news on the road,

i was right in saying it would be fast tracked because of the operators in there. i think it all hinges on the Historic Places boffins having a little field trip in there and saying yay or nay or whatever.

a new bench it seems.

madsonic: yeah, the whole country is ready to let go. it's that time of year when it all comes crashing down. it's amazing how much goes on each winter freeze thaw.

i went into the depth of the canyon a couple of times in september a few years ago under the canyon swing (they let me use their emergency route) and the last chute down to the river was basically moving under my feet it was so saturated the ground.

at this time of year i'm always looking up for rocks. something i learnt after a few scares in the 12 mile after DOC blew up the cliff over me.
