This is going to be more of a tell than a show and tell as my mrs is in Adelaide and has the camera with her. I shot out into the middle of nowhere for three nights with a mate and managed to scrape together 6.8 grams of just small gold. Was a great trip despite the small amount of gold, got pretty windy at nights but had pretty sunny days.

On the way home stopd and tried a stream on the side of the road. Had my first bit of gold in 30 seconds! Ended up finding 1.5 grams in an hour or so including on piece which was on a side track that crossed the stream. It was snowing at this point so had to leave in order to thaw out.
Will be interesting to see what that creek will turn up as there are no visible workings on it and Ive never read anything about gold there.

And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

just goes to show matt that the gold can be anywhere. or more like everywhere, in some places.

while the miners prospected every spot they could, it's a big land out there and there's more missed spots than tried and proven spots.

all it takes is a good little patch.

i know most people sticking to what's been proven. but many of these spots are well beaten with detectors so you need to be pretty onto it to still find too much.

i've started roaming about more. it's amazing what you can find hidden away so close to population.

only the other day i was standing on a terrace with some mates when i spotted a tunnel. was barely 10 metres from where we stood but hidden behind a screen of rose hip and matagouri. there was some gear there too. had been there a while but not from the rush. one of my mates found a cave later that still had cooking gear and stuff in it.

Sounds like good times to me, cold times maybe but good. Your roadside panning made me remember......

Twenty odd years ago A mate and I were dredging in the Grey Valley not too far south of Reefton. The motor on the dredge blew up, and the nearest place to get a replacement at the time was Nelson. We headed off and for no good reason panned almost every creek near the road crossings, between Reefton and Hope saddle. We found gold in every single creek we tried, at least one tiny colour. I was amazed, no real hot spots except perhaps one, which had squillions of tiny fly speck colours in every dish. I was never overly keen on fine gold, so didn't bother trying to remember the name of it. Only remember it was well north of Murchison, and was on farmland, flowing from west side of valley. So it's there alright, and the best way to not find it, is by not trying. Later NUGGY
