Absolutely phantasmagorical - what more can I say - it has inspired me to watch all two thousand videos on you tube of the storm - Well it might be a slight exaggeration but lots there and many worth watching.

Simon - just how far are you into photography - I want to learn how to take glass plate photographs...do you know anything about this?

lammerlaw,

it's all about digital these days. i wouldn't even know where to look to find supplies for plate glass photography. i think the internet would be a great tool and you would have to import all the stuff from america. i'm sure someone caters for this still as its an old art form i guess.

one thing i will point out. it took several minutes for some of the exposures you see in old photos, or many seconds. a long time compared to todat where an average shutter speed is 1/60th second thru to say 1/500th of a second for most shots except landscapes.

it is because of this that you will see in most old photos containing several people or more that one or two people are sort of blurry. they have moved to some degree during the exposure. and stuff like the pet dog may well disappear from the exposure as the dog has run about too fast.

here is a photo published in the odt by another local photographer of the storm over queenstown last night:
