Hi Folks

Managed to nab a leave pass for a day to zip off. She who must be obeyed in a good mood for fathers day i guess.
Was thinking of heading over the pass and have a look up some of the little creeks around the Lake Daniell track if it is legal??

Do you guys think it is worth taking the pan and using up a leave pass or got some good old advice? Normally I try to do the leg work myself, but time is a problem! Dont mind going for a good walk up the river beds and I like to dig holes, just not hundreds of them in a day!!!

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nick
Dab

From what I read whilst lurking on here, technically anywhere outside of the official fossicking areas is a no-no - whether in reality that prevents you or not is a personal choice ;)

Be aware there are some existing claims up in that area, Pell stream & Alfred so I wouldn't go dipping ya pan in someones patch without checking first, but there should be plenty of spare places around to give it a shot.

They're on the permit map here :)

Hope it goes well!

Hi Guys

Thanks for the info and the links, still trying to come to grips with all this information!

Dab - I will be staying well clear of any claim without an invitation thats for sure, not worth my nuts!!!
Wont be dredging or anything similar just turn some rocks, maybe looking for koura!!!!

The creeks to the east look like they may be worth the walk NH and I appreciate that information. Would think staying in the hut would be the idea to have a few days???

Here you go:
http://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ft-id=4794160&ft-q=SELECT%20geometry%20FROM%204794160%20WHERE%20TypeCode%3D%27MINING%27%20AND%20Status%3D%27GRANTED%27&ll=-42.32409,172.263282&z=14

One of those claims belongs to one of the frequent posters on these forums. I won't divulge his handle / name - that's up to him if he wants to ;)

Good luck - been up there a few times myself. Ventured up to Pell Stream Hut to get past the claims. Was a bit more of a mission than expected as not the flattest terrain! Would have been better if I had longer than a weekend as after the hike in / out there wasn't too much time to play around.

Look forward to hearing how you get on!

Hi Gavin

Thanks for that topo link, heaps clearer than my old map!!

Will certainly let you all know how I get on, best way to share info and then you can all laugh at my mistakes, I know I do!!! Quite sure I will be able to let you know where the best sandflies are to.

The topo appears to show a vehicle (4WD) track some way in does anyone know if this is correct or is it a private track?? happy to walk but heck if it gives me 15 mins extra with the pan

Nick

I've used the 4wd track a fair few times now. Worse bit is the river crossing - just get out of there if you have heavy rains! Made the decision to flee midnight one time as was bucketting it down - glad we did as took a look at the river next morning and it was high and brown. Could have been stuck over there a day or so.

If you want to walk in the Lake Daniels track is easy and easy to find shallow spots to cross. There's even the odd tree if your lucky and want to keep your feet dry.

Gavin

Thanks heaps for that, with the weather being a bit unsettled might just beat the feet, see how we go but will be keeping a good eye up above, sounds like she comes up a bit quick!!!

Ytb8ta7 - That is an awesome name, hope you got that on your personalised plate!!!
That is an incredibly generous offer, one which I would be really grateful for. Just sorting out my work schedule, and will fire you a PM as soon as I can nail down a day. Be bloody good to just start meeting a few of the people on here. Be in touch

i have heard rumor that the guys that have the claim are mean old bastards one is a ppossum hunter and will sneck up behind you and put a trap on the thing that hangs down between your legs if he catches you on his claim apparantly though you dont have to worry as his partner is a logging contractor and has some blunt chainsaws that he is only to willing to cut the trap of for you weather you want him to or not

dont get put of be my gest but lookout if i catch you up there with out permission

send a pm and maybe something can be arranged we do have a poacher up there at present he lives in greymouth and drives a toyota i know his name but wont post it yet but much more of his poaching and i will

the river crossing wont be able to be used after all the rain

maybe the first member of a new "NAME & SHAME" section?

that's pretty low. does he keep returning or something?

bit different if it's just an unaware member of the public but if they are driving for miles and returning time and time again.

i bet you are fuming.

i'm guessing they know full well it's claimed? and they would see your handiwork too i guess.

i have made it a habit to check the permit map before i go into new areas. so many new claims it's hard to keep up.

good luck with your poacher.

maybe some buckshot in the ass will sort it.

Hey kiwikeith

Good to know that is your neck of the woods!!! I dont like blunt chainsaws, even less when the chain is on backward. Will flick you a PM.
Part of the reason I like to ask questions is so not to cause problems if possible, and all the awesome information from the forum members here has helped me stack loads.

We have a poaching problem on our block in the hills, fences cut, gates smashed and our hut contents stolen, including my frigging deer heads, hence the reason I can understand some of your frustration!! Good luck with that w.....er, hope karma is a dirty rusty old gin trap!!

Nick
