Not too bad at all but not surprising considering that this is the new age of Metal detecting with the opportunities that metal detectors give which were not available to the fossickers of the past.

The bloke thats holding it has an interesting look on his face that can only mean one of two things a) what he is holding is a caste of the real one or b) hes plotting to hightail it for a destination unknown in the not too distant future.

i also noticed the peculiar look on the guys face, sort of smug. like he found it or knows where it was found.

i think they mentioned in the article that school holidays were coming up. i hope there actually is a real version of the nugget if this is indeed a cast version.

i know it wouldn't be the first time a gold themed centre has run a newspaper story to generate a stir and get punters thru at holiday time.

Hi guys, I think the article said he was the CEO of the Sovereign Hill museum, so not the finder. Note he is wearing gloves to handle it as well.
Another thought is that maybe Minelab area bout to release the much awaited & speculated latest GPX detector, as history shows, it is funny how a news release of a large nugget find comes out to get everybody excited.....& then bingo.....the new detector is on the market. Time will tell.

Good luck out there.

that's where i've seen that guys face - sovereign hill guy.

i'm sure there is good gold out in the golden triangle but how would a bit this size be just lying under a tree? from my experience here in nz stuff way smaller is always down as far as it can go, or else trapped against or between boulders or bedrock fissures.

a shame there wasn't a little more detail. there is always some info that can be given out that wouldn't give away its source.

the timing of the discovery does smell more now you have reminded me of the new detector coming.

if only there was stuff this size in nz.

check out the new 1.5 oz nug in the arrowtown gold shop, found in the shotover.

keith, i'm always digging. there's some big holes out there. might be historic in 100 years and protected. didn't mean no gold came out of some of them thou.

i think digging deep is the way to go. down to bedrock or to obstructions such as rock slabs in old channels. anywhere others can't be bothered is where the biggest chance of finding a good find.

sometimes its easier to do some stream sluicing though as at least you always get some gold. digging deep is high risk but worth it for the potential reward.

there's so many places out there left to hit with detectors thats for sure. and some spots just seem to keep giving.

i've been mixing it up as i want to venture in to new places.

might even do some camping soon as the weather is running pretty good this year.
