Just noticed a black sand mining licence for sale on trade me. It is in the Buller region north of Westport. Listing #506987688. It was a $1 reserve but is up over $500 now. Too far away for me, up in KIwiKieths' area. Nuggy

Yeah I had been watching this too. http://www.trademe.co.nz...isting.aspx?id=506987688

It's up to $1010.00 now, that’s what sparked my interest and question in the forum... www.paydirt.co.nz/forums...acksands-beachsands.aspx

Gota say, I am also member of the gold dredging site, and I asked the (very very) experienced moderator of that site about this type of operation, if you want to know what he told me, then PM me and I can post to you, I dun want to post on here as discretion is the better part of valor.

i saw that too. $17,000.00. that's a heck of a lot for a beach that has no consents and cuts once in a blue moon. give my a river or old terrace to dig any day.

Yeah. One of the largest beach claims on the West Coast.

From the comments, it looks like they got the claim a couple of years ago, worked it for a short time, then gave up.

I was looking at dropping $7k max on it - as a punt.

Might look at getting a fresh claim over there somewhere but there's not much that's still free - and accessible. It would be nice if you could actually test a location before applying for a claim, but that's illegal. :(

Beach licences are very sought after over here. They can give very good returns for what is (compared to other types of mining) low outlay on gear. No major access problems usually, and doesn't freeze solid in winter. Beach claims are often worked by semi-retired people.
Local experienced black sand miners know what the potential and historical returns, and therefore the values are on each claim area, and any really good area can be snapped up quickly, for big money at times.
I hear of some very impressive one day totals being won off the beaches at times, one of the guys I used to whitebait with would often split a couple of ounces for a days shovelling with his partner. Though at other times, no gold would be found at a workable depth for months on end. So you wouldn't want to depend on it.
