Just on the token...........I found this bit of info on the Net..........interesting "character" was Professor Holloway according to the bit below and on the Wiki page;

"Professor Holloway was a British philanthropist and possibly a bit of a character if you read between the lines. These tokens were circulated all over the British Empire during the mid-19th century, along with his products. He claimed that his pills and ointments could cure a vast and impressive range of ailments. After his death and some scientific evaluation, it was found that his medications contained nothing of significant medicinal value".

Still desperately seeking my first token (sigh).....so well done Roy!

hi no 8 wire,when you find one dont be tempted to brush it clean,the patina is very delicate on them,just rinse it,pat dry it and soak it in olive oilfor a couple of days,then gently rub the loose off with a wood toothpick,you can ruin them easily as i have found,cheers roy

Many thanks for the advise Roy....always welcomed.
At this stage of proceedings (about 4 weeks into it), I can use all the advise I can get! What exactly does the olive oil do? I'm guessing it helps preserve the patina? Does olive oil help also to bring back a bit of the lustre on the token? Before I try it, can you also use this technique to help preserve patina on other coins?

hi,the olive oil just slowly and safely gets rid of the dirt ,it will leave any top surface as found,it wont get rid of verdigris,anything else is too strong and leaves coppers and bronze coins dull with no eye appeal at all,any pennies you want to display try this it takes quite a while to get right,bronze pennies etc that you want to clean quicker and are worth nothing i use a mini grinder with a brass brush wheel it will put minute scratches on them but you can then buff them up and put them in your collection.also i give mine a coating of renaissance wax witch will protect and shine.put them in a4 size 30 pocket coin holders they look very impressive when you have a few in neumerical order,its becomes a challenge to try and get full sets especially if you are not buying them ,welcome to the world of coins.cheers roy
