Well done mate.

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

That lion brooch thing! I found one too. The hook thing had broken off as I pulled it from the mud so I didn't know how it fitted. At the back mine had three loops. I still have no idea what it is. Let me know if you find out. 11 silvers! well done.

Unbelievable! I found it. The lions head! It is military!

Here is a quote from militaria nz forum member:

"... I am unaware of a specific 1914 slouch badge as such, their were a few varieties. There were several NZ regiments and squadrons who had hooks on their hat badges and wore them ''slouch style during the terittorial period(starting 1912) to early in WW1.The volunteer fern or lion's head badge with a hook allowing the hat to be folded up on one side to create the slouch effect was also worn in WW1 .I have seen many photo's like this in early first war photo's(both mounted and infantry)wearing these badges. In mid 1915 regulations forbade the wearing of the hat ,slouch style.."

your best find on that outing me thinks!

Here's a ref to images of the badge:

well done!

Awesome piece of early NZ military history....and thanks Tony, for finding the info. I gotta get me one of those badges! Planning an all-day hunt tomorrow, so we'll see what it brings.

That sounds exactly like mine. So I ventured out into the paddock and found a rusty horse shoe!
