Go check out some beech,s inside bends you would be surprised what is lurking even a couple of inches down well away from bedrock.
Good luck .

local detecting lessons:

while not always true (gold is where you find it):

1. most spots have been hit hard.

2. you need to think outside the square.

3. try for the most awkward spots where fewer people dare to venture.

4. the big rivers close to town have flood gold on the surface but it is usually a long way down thru tailing to bedrock.

5. nearly all rivers / streams are claimed. do your research before heading out.

6. gold was even found under queenstown itself, and nuggets on queenstown hill (again - private property).

7. talk to some locals once here - they may help out with some insider info not to be posted here.

8. some rivers / areas are a nightmare to detect because of hot rocks - you need a good detector for these areas especially.

9. don't go waving your detector about. bag it and assemble once you are out of sight. this keeps your profile down as too many detectors will get tongues wagging.

i'm sure much more could be added, and much of this would apply to elsewhere too.
