I'm a newbie to metal detecting in New Zealand after doing it for several years in WA.
Its a whole different scenario here when metal detecting and I need some advice and any helpful hints and ideas about getting started here. I have done some of my homework about places to go.

Do I need a miners right or a certificate to swing a metal detector?
(If so, where do I get it and how much does it cost?)

Can I detect on DOC land?

Can I detect on reserve land?

Can I pan or detect in any river in the South Island?

Where can I get the rules that are in plain english?

Any tips and ideas are greatly appreciated

Basically there are 16 locations where you can legally go to pan and fossick for gold. These are the public fossicking areas. Other than that you need a claim which costs thousands.
Im pretty sure virtually everyone goes hunting outside of these areas tho, but keeps out of peoples claims. I have been caught in doc land by some doc guy nd wished good luck,I wouldnt repeat that too many times tho. On farms you are on fairly safe ground if you can get permission to go golding on them. Outside the 16 areas set aside there are no provisions for hobbyists. Hope that helps.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Hi Hatter,
You mentioned "if you can get permission to go golding on them".
Can you tell me what is generally expected from the person who is given permission to do this "golding".

I came across someone who said I could go on their farm but they were wanting to go half in whatever I found. I found that a bit much, because I was supplying the detector, doing the research and basically doing all the work. They could shut me down on their bit of pasture at any time, and especially if I came onto a patch.

Thanks,
Pixie

Hi Hatter,
I realise too late that I have my questions in the wrong file. It should have been in the general forum.
But now that I am on a roll I think maybe I could stay in here.

You also said that a claim costs thousands.

Does anyone know if there are any small claims for sale?

Is there a set way of staking a claim?
(I pegged two of my own prospecting licences in WA and I thought I may be able to do it here.)

its a long road getting a claim in nz, my mate and i just got one but if it wasn't for the help of a cupple of people i think we would of gaven up lol,to apply for a permit cost $3271 you need to prove theres minerals in the ground(history records are allgood), have a work plan set out, have the area surveyed and signed off by a surveyor to say its sweet, u also need to prove you have experience in what u are planning on doing, also have to prove you have enough money to maintain your claim and gear ect, public liability insurance, the list goes on in the end could cost someone whos starting from scratch a lot of money ,then gotta pay the council 900 to apply for water rights(went up from $600 to $900 from 1st of july :O ),our government is a hard one to crack

when i go detecting i only go on claims i have asked the owners before i go on them if its ok or if its unclaimed its usually ok but remember if anyone official on unclaimed land asks what you are doing tell them you are trying to collect all the old lead bullets to melt down to make sinkers for when i go fishing :P

what sort of detector have you got ?? if its a minelab p.i machine you want to sell it ????

pixie you were asked earlier if you were planing on Just gold detecting or lost treasures as well such as coins/relics and what not?

if you are looking to detect stuff other than gold then you can go to just about any public park to detect and all beaches without permission...unless a private beach of course...Most a&p type show grounds you need to ask permission..and from what i understand you need permission for most school grounds as well.

Most towns i think also have what they call a domain...they can also be detected without permission as they come under the public park catigory.
