Here are some photos of what the Shotover River looked like during a record breaking fortnight long cold snap in August 2007.

I was just emailing them to some other guys so thought i would share here also.

I have been out there on Sat and again today (Mon). Looks like if this cold keeps up it may beat 2007. Sorry, didn't have my camera today but plan to go out there again tomorrow.

Today saw some good sized ice come downstream. 1 piece i saw you could have fitted a few people on. it was as thick as my arm easy.

My wing dam from Saturday was frozen solid on the bank edge.

Check out the size of the cliff icicles in photo 15. those are silver beech trees next to them.

chchfossicker:

depends on what weather you get here.

if the highs break it may warm up a bit. it doesn't take too much for it all to melt off for a bit.

i went sluiceboxing on sat and had no trouble. just kept off the waters edge a bit as it was all frozen on the bank.

and there's always somewhere a little sheltered from frosts.

i try and travel with at least a pan and shovel nowadays as you don't know where you will end up with a few minutes to fill.

Great stuff - I love it - thanks Simon and Zimbo - love that country and recognize the exact spots where I have spent many a happy hour so a double whammy for me - seeing the ice and how it is today and bringing back happy memories.

Russia? I think I have heard of that place - isnt it a bit north of Rotorua? - I have two pieces of rock here - one piece sort of fell of the Lenin Mausoleum thing and the other piece fell of the Winter Palace!

Theres a beauty 'fishing' boat over there to - It can even smoke the fish and everything else in a ten ks radius - its sort of anchored at a place called St Perersburgh - its even equipped for Duck Shooting - Its called the Aurora - they wont let me have it though which really stinks.

Thanks for those photos. Every now and then we need a gentle reminder as to why we don't live down south. Those photos do that for me.
