Hello :) it depends how much weight you want to swing, you can get the 22oz with a long handle if you want, see how it feels in your hands, It can get a bit weary on the wrists, I use a 22oz Eastwing geo hammer and it really chews the cracks open, use the weight of the hammer head to do the digging you do the swinging and all way's swing with a purpose and direction, don't go hitting boulders with the pointed end as this reduces the effectiveness of the point. My last hammer I was happy with for 10 years with it's sole use digging up gold, and has now been passed down to a mate and is still getting good use.

As Sean says the long handled 22oz is far better balanced and easier to use, i have been using one for many years and have it has never failed.

Be careful where you get it from. Anywhere who sells Estwing will get one for you, but the price might vary by 100%. Estwing makes all sorts.

I would probably order one from overseas. I gave up on the wee piddly ones years ago, and use a 6lb geo hammer forged in Dunedin, but I just break rocks, not pick stuff out of cracks.
