Just thought I would say hi, Joined up to your great site last week and have been watching the goings on over the last week to get a feel of whos who in the zoo.. ;)

I'm in Auckland/North Shore and apart from owning a very cheap and nasty Metal detector when I was about 12 (and having the best fun detetcing all the stuff around the house I could lay my hands on) have not touched a detector in a long time.

I have a Teknetics T2 on the way from the US which is just going through Customs at the mo. (The waiting is almost over woohoo) :)

I'm figuring from the reserach i've done so far i'm going to need to setup some test patches at home and get some field time on some of the more comon items people are finding like those blasted Pull tabs and the likes.. ;)

Anyways thanks and good huntin..

Brett

Welcome aboard Brett.
I think there is another new T2 on the forum here somewhere so maybe you can connect.
Test patches are ok but getting out and having a go is good too. Good luck.

Yeah I agree with Chris, nothing like on the job training.
Even when you think you have it mastered surprises keep popping out of the ground.

Welcome and know you will have many hours of fun on the beaches. Nothing like a new detector to really whet the appetite! Not familiar with the T2 but if you can eliminate those pull tabs (which are everywhere) you'll be smiling! Happy hunting and we just might see you out and about.

The T2 arrived today. :). Have been running round our property with it picking up nails, milk bottle tops and wads of tin foil... lol Its dark now so no more fun to be had and treasure to be found... :) need to buy some gloves as it gets dirty digging the ground with bare hands, any recommended brands that people have found good ?

Hey Apostle40.......don't let darkness stop you! I have still to pick up my detector (next week) but have already invested in a mega-bright headlamp, in anticipation of my first night-dig!
Cheers and good luck with your new detector, number8wire.

Welcome to the Forum - Hope you have a great time with your detector - they are sure fun things to have and there is always the element of the unexpected ranging from Coins including Silver ones and Gold Sovereigns, Silver and Gold rings and other treasures through to Kempai Tai like Gestapo Officials from the local council, Hysterical Places Trust and DOC.

PS - Look under the clothesline!

Gloves are required if you use the hand in the hole.... lots of things will bite you :)
If you use the hand as a digger I suggest a good heavy leather gardening glove. But you wont feel the target very well.

I use a light rubberised glove and just use my hand to scoop out the dirt rather than dig or poke about. That's what the digging tool is for.... speaking of which.. A stiff/strong putty knife with an edge filed/ground onto it is a good cheap plug cutter... the curved blade sure makes cutting grass roots easy. Being stiff it will lever out the plug nicely, with the advantage of nice clean plugs on manicured lawns/parks.

Once the plug is out use the putty knife to loosen the dirt and scoop with a gloved hand. Shallow targets don't even need a plug, just a slot cut in the grass, wiggle the blade to open it and feel about with a gloved finger. A table spoon is good for digging out inside the slot if the target happens to be deeper than you thought, or over to one side.

Try Mitre 10 for a good selection of gloves and go cheap as the expensive ones wear out just as fast.
