When cleaning out a sluice box from a dredge or a high banker....and you are classifying...there could be a chance a nugget or gold bearing rock goes out with it...baby with the bath water so to speak.

I have seen guys run the tailings under a detector before tossing them just for insurance...here is the question.

What small low grade detector would be good enough for this task? Something without all the bells and whistles that should detect down to a #8 in a plastic sieve at about 6 inches?...

I dont recon you will get a cheap detector that will detect small gold at 6 inches. I have a gold bug and recon if you have a pea size piece of gold you may get it at 6 inches,if youre lucky. That detector cost me $800 and I recon its a great machine
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

I tell you what. Once you get it, head over to Alaska and run it over the ground at the output of the sluice of those idiots in "Gold Rush".

They finally hit paydirt and they're STILL losing most of the gold from letting the sluice clog up with silt. Sigh.

oroplata: or he could go further north to dome and get and underwater detector and run it over the ground of the worst performing dredge - .75 oz for the season cos they spent too much time in fighting and the guy in charge who thought he knew it all had the sluice set up too steep and all the gold fell back down into the sea.

i know of old timers who helped me out when i started into gold who would always test pan the tailings to see if they were losing any. maybe a good idea when you first set up but it all takes time. i would rather be throwing further material thru the box.

if you were going to use a detector i would be thinking you would need a decent detector as ideally if any gold is being lost it would be the fines or perhaps quite line bigger flakes that catch the flow. if bits big enough to decent with a cheap detector are being lost the sluice has some serious issues in its set up.

something like a gold bug that is designed for small stuff would be ideal. still reasonable price when compared to a minelab or similar.

Okay, then say less than 6 inches, just run it around inside the seive above the tailings?

Goldrush Alaska?...I am glad I don't have a TV...

Not to worried about setting up the dredge...just worried I may throw out a small nugget when clasifying...

Im not sure but most of you guys seem to have misread what LBD was saying, hes not worried about losing gold through the sluice but rather the piles of stuff that you get when you seperate out fines to put thru sluice box. Gold bug has my vote will get anything wothwhile, just spread the tailings out a bit.. Ive actually got bits so small that i cant pick them up with my fingers.
Another idea is dont classify your material, you dont really need to if you have enough water flow, think of a 6 inch dredge, they put rocks almost up to 6 inches thru the sluice box. You still wouldnt get gold in quartz boulders anyway but thats so rare its hardly worth bothering with.

Yeah, a gold bug would suit the job well.
Cheers
