Well i went out for a hunt in timaru today with madsonic and i found my first and only farthing 1912 by the looks of it...also got a 42 thrupence....but the best find of the day for me was this 1831 brit half crown....it is my oldest coin find to date and maybe the oldest coin find here on the forum so far?

not sure but i think so..lol..

sorry the pic isnt great and you can only just see the date under a magnifying glass so you wont see it in the picture but the head on the coin is that of william 4th..which were made between 1831 and 1834...the coin is prety worn but i am soaking it for a bit in ammonia in the hopes of seeing the date clearer.

Very nice Chris. I've yet to find a pre 20 sterling silver halfcrown but that would certainly do as a start.!

I've found an 1821 half crown, but the pic on mine is different to yours, same dude but the other side is different. I might post pics later if I get time.
Its my eldest coin I've found too and prob my fav silver coin in my collection.

Happy Hunting

You're spot on Chris, George 4th was on the throne till 1830, then William 4th from 1830 till Victoria's accession in 1837.

Sorry, at a glance this morning he looked the same.
Bear with me and I'll try add some pics of mine.

Very similar, hence my mistake.

Well done expat, I guess you are the only one that can remember that far back. Can you remember the romans? Cheers Mike.

Vaguely Mike, though its all a little hazy these days.

I can even remember the time you found more silver than me.

Digjust1more -

Great find. You have certainly been digging up a few great treasures. Still using the second-hand 350?

Probably a tad warmer here than down south, but then we are not as hardy as you mainlanders.

I think I'm getting the hang of the 705. Try to get out a couple of days each week. Amassing plenty of coppers, but the better finds seem to be down south, except for that american silver dollar from tezan in Hamilton.

Looking forward to some more posts.
