I wonder how thick the glass is as they were made for perfume rather than gold - I learnt many times the hard way over the years that light bottles made for pills and medicines and other liquids tend to break when any solids are put in them.

I use small DSIR specimen bottles for the smaller nuggets and flakes and large DSIR ones for nuggets which dont fit into the smaller bottles which comfortably take 1.5 ounces or around 48 grammes.

I have included a photo of these bottles and from the photo you can see how thick the glass is - I have not had any break that I can remember in fifty years as I got the first of them when I was still at Primary School. I understand that they are still available.

The shape of the larger ones you have shown us is absolutely ideal - I do like them and must admit that I would like to hold one to access it for myself as I would indeed get some of the larger ones.

Good point Lammerlaw,

I will try and 1/2 fill one with lead shot and give it a work out and let everyone know
I don't want to recommend anything not up to0 the task.
Ill get some photos of that other thing you were interested in and get them through to you
I took some the other night but the flash was a little bright - will try again during the day

Black Pete! Dont like the sound of him too much - Bit of a shady character
Never had to watch anything like that when I was a kid, mind you Popeye would even be considered politically incorrect now.

I think that the smaller bottles would be really nifty to put fine colours and flakes in to give away as gifts to people so no qualms there about buying them.

I liked Black Pete - a likeable rogue. As for Popeye - Spinach never worked for me so I can only assume hes a fraud - and Olive Oil is configured all wrongly - shes sort of like a lamp post, no handle bars. They are all politically incorrect - created by communist factions planted in Western World society to corrupt tender little minds - like Big Ears and Noddy (Gay?) Bill and Ben the Flower Pot Men (Speaks for itself) Mickey and Daisy ( Him leading her astray and living in sin which is quite a good idea actually)

Looking forward to seeing the other thing.

Thanks to lammerlaw's coments , I did a quick test on the glass vials this morning.

1/2 filled the vial with small nuts and bolts, gave it a couple of shakes, and off came the top, from the neck up.
So probably not the best vial for storing nuggets.
I guess they will have something that would be suitable, but as I havent found any nuggets yet, I dont want to put the cart before the horse
but then again, as the motto of Scouts went, always be prepared.

Hi guys, Plastic vials & bottles are the best to use for your precious gold. Drop plastic & you have no problem. Drop glass with gold in it & guess what happens.........

I had a grin John because you are right - drop glass and it breaks BUT accidently stand on plastic and it does to whereas the thick DSIR specimen bottles never do!

I tell a lie - I had one with 1 1/2 oounces of gold in it and shook heck out of it with water and Jiff in it to shine the gold and it broke!

You have to be careful with plastic to I feel as I have had more breakages with plastic than with bottles - never use thin glass though. The old glass pill bottles are diabolical. Plastic pill bottles have a limited life and much to my disappointment dont last ling before they develop cracks and split.

Currently I carry a hair gel container which is plastic - My last one lasted six or so years but Goofy stood on it - Inside it I keep one of the specimen bottles pictured above.

When working in a river I found that plastic also tends to float and yes I have had a bottle with gold float of into the glorious unknown.
When I am working in the river I generally use a thick glass bottle and keep it full of water and with the lid on until I want to put more gold in it - if the bottle falls in then it sinks to the bottom and doesnt float away.

A thick glass bottle is my first choice but I also do use plastic now and again and always carry one of those hair gel containers. I do save the plastic pill containers tog ive gold away in though and tell people that when they get home to put their gold into a separate container.

Hi Graeme, Some very good advice there....re filling the bottle with water so if you do drop it in the water it will sink to the bottom & not float off. :)
I have a pic here of some of the plastic screw top vials & bottles I use.

UserPostedImage

The bigger ones: I carry one in a little digital camera zip up carry pouch that fits onto my waste belt that I wear when out detecting. Any gold I find goes into it. The belt also carries my pick, a pocket knife & GPS unit. The little white topped bottle is a glass one which I was given three of. I didnt want them but the bloke had a box full of them & said to take some. The other white top ones are plastic. The bonus of these three sizes is that they fit inside each other. The little glass one fits inside the white top plastic ones which in turn fit inside the bigger ones. Great if I want to any keep gold seperate when out in the field. I keep an inventry of all the gold I find. Date, location & what coil I was using. I keep the gold found with the different coils in different bottles & like wise with different locations. When I get home I can weigh up what I have & make a note of what coil found what & the different loctions. So the different size bottles fitting inside each other comes in handy out in the field.

Hi John
I guess we all have our favourites and choices so in the end it comes down to personal choice.
I wear an American Medics pouch and in it I keep spare batteries in plastic air rifle pellet containers because these hold two 9 volt batteries each and stop the batteries shorting out.
I carry one of the Hair Gel containers to hold larger amounts of gold and a glass DSIR bottle with ultra thick glass as well.
I also carry a pair of tweezers to pick up gold under water or in cracks out of reach of fingers.
I carry another small plastic container with a dozen .303 shells for my rifle in case of pigs or deer.

I carry enough bottles to keep the gold separate as I put the gold into bottles back at home according to where the Gold was found.

I used to keep fanatical records, day after day and year after year but 25 years ago I decided it wasnt worth it anymore keeping my running records or any other records for that matter and stopped doing it and now I havent a clue in a million what I have in weight now...some of it I hid and cant find but its there...somewhere!
I think that the last full running record I kept was for 1984 and it was interesting as I recorded 42 days away from home - 36 actual working days - averaged five hours work per day that I was working - total 180 hours work - total gold kept and not counting what I gave away and never weighed came to 21 ounces 12 dwt and 14 grains. Roughly $43,000 dollars at todays price or $238 per hour. It aint like that so much nowdays!

Great idea! I had two of those 9 volters in my pocket one day out detecting and after a while I noticed my leg was getting a tad hot......yep you guessed it, they were shorting out on one another in my pocket! Now I cant use that pocket anymore as it has a bloody hole! Luckily they didnt ignite etc.

i think lammerlaw has pointed out something that everyone should be very aware of.

9 volts batteries are terrible for transporting.

the trouble is that both the positive and negative terminals are next to each other ( usually on opposite ends of most batteries) are love to short out if you have stuff like keys, or just 2 9 volt batteries, in your pocket / vehicle glovebox, etc.

they need either little plastic carry cases, or some sort of homemade case, to transport them in.

a burnt hole in your pocket is one thing but a burnt out vehicle in the middle of nowhere not so good.
