Hello fellow gold-bitten types. I see lots of photos of lovely big bits, absolutely nothing like the little flakes I've got from the Wakamarina, I must be going in too far downriver!! I gave up on the river last year, the sandflies are hard as nails, they drink blood and dimp cocktails!! But Gold bites deep, I'll be back this year. Nice site guys, keep up the hard work. Joe.

Cheers Gavin, I was scratching around on Wednesday way up Deep Creek (tributary,Wakamarina)I Lasted 95 minutes in bicep deep water, didn't cover much ground, I enjoyed the scramble back to the track in sodden (leaky apparently) waders almost as much as my little finds! It was NASTY COLD I'm too far south for September!! Joe.

I think I'll stick to the metal detector myself while the water's so cold! I get numb enough feet in the summer... though I must admit - I don't have any waders, just old trainers so that might be part of the problem! :P

Gidday Hatter

When are you gracing us with your presence in Blenheim? Be good to catch up, tell yarns and perhaps Home Command will let me out for a while.

Mate! I know that one, when I first started, I wore sports sandals!! Even the Aorere in Golden Bay is cold in those!! Gave up being wet when I scored some chest waders from the sally army shop in Lower Hutt! God bless the Sallies!!!

Joe.

Hi guys, I'm Steve a keen prospector. I'm moving to Blenheim next month and will be staying in one of the cabins at the Pinedale Motor Camp for two weeks while my wife, two boys and I find some where to live. I will be prospecting regularly in the area and would be keen to hook up. I have lots of gear - pans, classifiers, sluice box, rotapan, Minelab Eurecka Gold detector. I was living in Auckland and prospecting in the Coromandel but after making a hand full of trips to the South Island have decided it's where I want my boys to grow up and I just can't wait to get back. Cheers, Steve.

Hi Guys I had some luck up the wakamarina about a month ago with lots of fine gold and yeah the sand flies are after blood at any given chance...... I'm keen to try the waka again soon I did stop in to pinedale but they were not keen on me setting up my sluice box, so guess I'll have to give my pan a good work out. I also shot down to Murchison labour weekend and no matter what method I tried I found gold, no bigger than a pin head in size as I was working the banks crevices, but every pan had gold sprinkles to light you... so looking forward to having a dig once the rivers drop a bit...

Where abouts in Murchison did you go? Some good spots when the rivers are down. Access can be a problem but it's great country

Hi Dave I Traveled down to the Lyell just off the main road, I'm driving a Commodore with sports suspension so it's alittle hard to travel to those tucked away spots, I do hope to travel down there soon, its a neat little town and the people are great down there, also 1864hatter like your method I often have thought of snorkling for the chunky bits, hope that water has warmed up abit for you, last time I was up there brrrrr, but hey once your seeing colour you soon forget...

Excellent stuff Hatter! Butchers' flat's a tricky place apparently, I've only had one (very short) visit up that far, got some wee peppery dust, but not half a gram/hour! I assume you were going manual with pan and box? Any photos? How was the water temp??
