"Featherstone says estimates put the average haul of gold from a tonne of scrap cellphones to be 340 grams per tonne. This is compared to 170 grams from a tonne of raw gold ore."

Thats interesting - I once decided to rescue the gold covered pieces from computers - time consuming but at the end of the day I still have quite a few pounds of what I assume to be gold plated or gold alloy pins, connections and so on...its looks like I am going to have to collect all the cell phones I can find.
I did some research on recovering the gold but in the end gave up in disgust...I wonder who would buy the cell phones for the recovery of the gold? There must be someone who buys them and recovers the gold...you have my primitive brain whirling around now thinking of get rich quick schemes.

The go-to forum for all aspects of golf refining (and other metals) is goldrefiningforum.com

I highly recommend it. Just be careful, they are used to dealing with rather dangerous chemical, so noobs can get beat up if they say anything silly.

Best to have a good read of the forum before posting.

i reckon there would be money in old phones too. i've seen the same programmes / articles on how much gold is in a tonne of phones.

all you need is a supply of cheap labour in the 3rd world. they melt down the parts, breath in all the crap, and hand over the gold to someone to on sell at a big profit.

that's the great thing about gold. no matter where it is used we can continually recover it. you have to wonder how many gold fillings disappear down at the morgue.
