hello all,
I'm in NZ for a year- traveling around in a van. I'm from Scotland and have been detecting for 3 years now and have brought my Garrett Ace 350 with me.
I've been doing a fair bit of beach detecting while heading round the coast but would appreciate some info on some good relic hunting spots around both islands. I'm in Hastings at the moment but will head up to the Coromandel area in a couple of weeks then head down to south island around august.

Anyone know if there is a Garrett MD dealer in NZ?

If anyone's up for a dig I would appreciate some local knowledge! wherever your based I will probably be passing through at some point!

NZ Metal Detectors are The Authorised Garrett Dealer for New Zealand - you can find them if you search for Garrett on trademe.co.nz

I am in Nelson if you are passing through we might have a play.
Own: Lobo SuperTraq, Garrett ATPro, Minelab Excalibur

If you are down in the deep south around Christmas time or after winter when the weather gets warmer then you can feel free to contact me and I may be able to take you to at least look for a bit of gold to take home with you.

I cannot guarantee success but can almost do so. In any case hope you enjoy Kiwiland and find the people friendly and fun to be with.

Hi there,
Welcome to NZ.
I would like to give a real quick breafing on "Relicts" in NZ :
first of all NZ is too young for real relics,
then all Maori relics are non metal.
and most importantly- almost all historical places are protected under historical act :-)
Please visit http://www.historic.org.nz/ for more info in order to avoid trouble.

Rather than that - any old park will do for a chance of Silver coins.but that is pretty much it here :-(

I hope other senior members will add their 2C :-)

Drunkbrother beat me to it Scotlad, I was just going to say the same about 'relic hunting'. I'm from the UK too and you will find that hunting for old relics is a far cry from how you are used to things back home. However if you like coinshooting, you'll find a higher proportion of silver coinage in your finds than UK hunting provides.
There's quite a large and thriving contingent down here in Christchurch, let us know when you are down because you're bound to find somebody available to hunt with.

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

Thanks for the fast replies.Glad i found this site.
I maybe shouldn't of used the word 'relics' i was thinking more along the lines of WW1/WW2 rifle ranges or camps I've had a fair bit of success from these back home, hunting around the area where the guns were fired from, would these be OK to detect in NZ?
