hi roy, thats a .303 bullet, the grooves are caused by the round having been jammed by the bolt, someone was trying to reload to quick,i know this as it happened to me.

Lammerslaw would know all about the company methinks - Colonial Ammunition Company. Formed in Auckland late 19th century and definitely made 303 ammo

Hagley had a rifle range in the moorhouse ave (old blenheim rd ) corner. I think about 1860? I have found unfired rounds in cranmer, latimer square and parks in north canterbury. Got 308 unfired a couple of weeks ago. Mike.
