Hi all

my name is andy and im in rangiora. have always loved the idea for finding a bit gold or at the very least interesting rocks. i enjoy taking the kids out in the 4wd and although they are still to young to go far ( ages 7 ,5 ,2) the all love fishing. so my hope is that one day can just pack up the truck with the rods/ rifles/tramping boots and gold pan and maybe the wife and head into the younder and see what we find. my brother has a mate over the coast and has taken couple of his mates and their kids for a bit of pannin and slucing and they loved it. good fun for everyone.
i see there is a claim (53058) towards the top of the hurunui , is there some thing there or is it deep down. it just seems to be in the middle of nowhere, but close enough to be enticing!

Hi Andy

You cant use pans in the middle of the Rangiora A & P showgrounds but you can use a detector! What I am saying is that a pan is for gold only and you have to havve somewhere to go but a detector is for gold and goodies and goodies can be found in backyards, race courses, playgrounds...dont be a cheapskate and go buy a detector...I can promise you that you will never regret it.

As for rocks - you are in an area where there are some great rocks to find - fossils up the coast at Motunau and great gemstones and petrified wood at Mt Somers - love those places.

Welcome aboard!

Regarding claim 53058 - looks like they're looking for any minerals...

Hello Andy

I'm also Andy from just up the road at Oxford. Just been to Goldsborough, a public fossicking spot near Hokitika on the west coast, where we did some panning and sluicing for a couple of days. Found a little, enjoyed it heaps.

From my limited understanding of geology, gold gets concentrated into cracks and faults in rocks by hydrothermal movements (hot water) during various processes in the rocks such as metamorphism (heat and pressure deep down in the crust) and from the effect of hot magma pushing up through the crust (but not erupting). The rocks of Canterbury are mostly very poor in such deposits. Apart from some very fine dust does not generally travel very far because of its weight. You might find something said on Hurunui if you do a search on the this site.

Hey

Not to sure if any of you detector guys or prospectors would be interested but I grew up on the West Coast and there was old water race that carried water to one of the power schemes near Hokitika. The race cut through a hill and therefor needed a tunnel. The tunnel had a railway line through it with sleepers in the bottom. The purpose being so they could shut the water off from time to time to clean the gravels which would accumulate out of the bottom of the tunnel. To cut a long story short the tunnel and race travelled through some gold bearing country and the sleepers in the bottom of the tunnel acted a little like riffles. As mentioned from time to time they would shut the water off, roll a wagon in clean out the tunnel and dump the contents over the hill which last time I was there about 10 years ago was a sizable pile. You could pan gold in the material but i often thought it would be good to run a detector over it. I've got a couple of dredging claims so my time off is busy enough but if anyone wants the location I could email them a map. Probably require a 4wd to get across a river if not it's about a 2 km walk from the road.

Cheers

Dgr

I would recommend you do your home work on that one. Don't go telling people to detect in places you know NOTHING about. Anyone detecting in the R/S will be reprimanded if caught. They are private grounds and leased out to various organisations. You need permission!

Was that in reply to me - Do you think I am bloody thick or something - I have worked over many A&P showgrounds and one racecourse and I have always ASKED PERMISSION - I probably did my homework before you were born! I apologise if you are so dumb as to assume that I would not have. Do you really and honestly think you can make recommendations to me? Did I even suggest that you dont ask permission? - Dont make assumptions otherwise you might make a fool of yourself.

I also would never make utterly stupid statements like 'Don't go telling people to detect in places you know NOTHING about.' - Are we referring to Rangiora - I know the area well as I lived and worked at Ashley long enough.

After your inane initial statement to which I made my reply and to which you then call me 'stupid' I might point out that its you who is the STUPID one for having made an assumption and inappropriate comment in the first place - now be a good diddums, go and TAKE YOUR PILL and sleep it off...When you wake up think carefully about what you say to others when you havent a clue what you are talking about.

Your point was without foundation and had absolutely no validity nor relevance to what I stated - If you want to pick on people and be childish for no reason go look in the mirror and talk to yourself.

I shall say nothing more so will wait with interest to see what you say to prove how stupid YOU are when you wake up and to which I shall not lower myself to reply.

fossil hunting can be a fun activity with the kids. Motunau beach is a good choice as lammerlaw said. About 90ks north of chch I think. He was just trying to be encouraging. He knows what he is talking about too. He has had heaps of experience and decades of gold fossiking, rock collecting, gun collecting, ancient artifact collecting and is one of the more experienced people here. He is also not stupid. I've taken my kids to Motunau. Check the tides charts and go when the tide is on the way out and say an hour to go before its dead low by the time you get there. That will give you time to head right along the beach (right along the beach under those towering and weathered cliffs ) and at low tide look for fist sized sand stone like rocks and try giving them a wack with your hammer. Some have fossil crabs inside. Low tide is when you are supposed to have the most chance of finding them at the low tide mark. And when its low it keeps you a little further out from those towering and unsafe looking cliffs too. I didn't find of the fossil crabs on any on my two trips there but my father in law did and has a sample or two at his house. If you don't find these you will find some fossils as the whole beach is full of fossilized shellfish. Kids like looking at rocks and stuff and its a great rocky beach. Bring a picnic lunch. An idylic spot.
