I haven't been able to get out hunting as much as I'd like, busy with different things that need doing and the sprogs.
Got out today for a couple of hours.
Most intresting find was a badge of some sort with a star and RUAHINE written on it. Haven't looked it up yet.
And the other looks to be two shell cases rammed together? Not sure.
And just pennies, British and NZ. Two silver shillings and a silver sixpence. All the coins in the bottom left of the pic were all in the same hole, 8 all up, dam wish they were silvers!! Just old school 20c 10c and 5c, biggest pocket spill Ive had in the one plug though.

I'll just post my pics etc in here when I get the chance. Sucks now with daylight saving over, can't get those few hours in after tea :( Have to wait for the weekends to do any decent hunts.
Happy hunting everyone :)

Oh also I'll add a pic of my second GOLD half sovereign that I have been lucky enough to find!! Just have to share :)

Granted I wasn't out with my detector when I found it, I was actually swinging a hammer LOL, our house is very old and I am doing some renovations, (knocking down an old brick fire-place)
Was cleaning up some of the bricks and morta and low and behold there it was, was over the moon to find it!
In our very own home, and within a month of the buzz of finding one out MDing.

:-D
Its dated 1900 and is in pretty ok condition.
They say things come in three's aye so fingers crossed I find another gold sov to get to the 'set of 3' haha

My mum and her family emigrated to NZ on the Ruahine in 1913.

Mexico, for generations, did not trust banks. Hiding your money (gold and silver coinage) in hidden cavities in the (always brick or concrete block) houses was the done thing.

Detectorists there are continuously unearthing large caches.

I would not be surprised to hear of similar finds here, in chimney brickwork of very old houses.

wow thats a cool find, lovely condition too.You could probably track down the person who deposited it, if you can trace the previous house owners.

Asterix, what a surprising thing to say. Bit of a conversation stopper. If it was me I wouldn't be tracking down any previous owners. What would one say:" Hey did you lose a gold sov back in the day, as I found it at the house?" That would leave yourself open to the answer, whether honest or not: "yeah I did... ta very much...." .....Me thinks I'd just keep it. And have a clear conscience about it.

Hmmm, sounds good in theory but it must have been one of the very first owners of the house to have put it there and seeing as it was the late 1800s I somehow doubt they are still around to welcome back the Gold sov that they put away for safe keeping :)

Well that wasn't exactly what i meant lol,the coin date would suggest the owner has long since gone to detectorist heaven.Just thought it would be interesting to match the date, to the occupier of the property at the time.
Then you could pass it to one of the grandkids! lol

It is not uncommon to find coins in old houses. If you see a demolition crew on a site with the old sash and cord windows, take a note of how careful they are to disassemble the window frame. Coins were often placed in such places, superstition, good luck, any number of reasons. Mostly they are low denomination, but the more wealthy often used half or full sovereigns. I found this out many years ago as a child when my father was replacing the cords in the old sash windows of our house and he pulled a couple of old coins out.

That would have been about 55 years ago, and the house at the time must have been at least 60 years old. Most common in houses pre 1920's.

In a house I was doing up many years ago I found old coins above the door frames.
