Hi guys, been panning for awhile around Southland, not long moved to Alex, and just bought my first detector. First day out with it today, totally wrecked my Colman camp shovel trying to dig up a good hit.... I'll go back another day with better gear

Welcome aboard Bikerman :)

If the ground is icy it'll chew through lesser shovels - it's like digging concrete! :P

Let us know if you find anything with the detector. Learning myself - picked up some good tips from another member here - kiwijw. Hopefully have some success on my next mission and not just find the usual spent shell casings. I'm feeling confident now I have a better idea of what I should be doing (I think).
