Hi everyone, Im as green as they get but ive been reading everything I can and heading out tommorow for my first time, been so excited I cant sleep. Live in Auckland so heading to Waiomu stream by Thames. My mates had a little look round by the stamper battery but I was thinking we might go up one of the side streams, read a clipping from the 1860s and it said thats where the source was. Also read the early stampers werent to efficent missing 30% so there might be a little colour in the tailings, even a bit of mercury that apparently will have traces(and toxins) in it so they might be worth a rummage. Ive been studying old maps of the coromandel mine fields and figured there the best places to go. I dont expect anyone to give me there top spots but just a nod that im thinking of looking in the right spots. Also any specific books, other websites etc. Ill post a picture or 2 of the spot I go to tommorow and would greatly appreciate anyones advise on where they would look. Im a little confused about the panning/ sluicing rules in the coromandel. I understand the South Island fossicking areas but whats up with the coro. Do in need a permit to pan or sluice on public land, can i use a pvc pipe/tennisball suction device, is it legal on Private land with permission. I am so excited Im allready planning a trip to the South Island next year and I havent even swirled my pan yet, I definatly have the fever. Good luck, happy panning and thank you for your time and any advice, its greatly appreciated

Well legally, you cant do it up there unless you have a claim. The South Island areas are the ONLY areas you can go to legally apart from a couple of camping grounds and businesses that allow ppl on their own claim. It sucks but thats the official line on it sorry. I'm sure that wont put you off though ;)
