You're off to a good start, both find wise and ethically.

Keep Karma working for you I say!

But...
There is a calculation in my mind: Depth = Time Lost = Time forgotten.
Well something like that.

What a great find! I would have liked to see the victory dance lol. Depends how much faith you have in getting it back from the police in 3 months if noone claims it whether or not to hand it in. If it's got no obvious inscriptions etc, it's going to be quite hard to find the owner. I found a gold pocket watch in the first few hours of operation of my f2 so I know how good it feels. It was only 9ct tho but had 25.12.33 on it so was quite old. Good on ya!

the only markings this has is 916 on every link. which when i got home found out means 91.6 % pure gold and 22ct. there was a dance in my head as there were a few people round couldnt be bohered with geting everyones attenion. did let out a bit of a "FUUCCCKK"

cant of been there to long as it was relativly shellow and not very ruffed up or baked in dirt

Great find. What to do what to do ...
You could always give the cops a photo and tell them you know where it is buried if anyone comes looking ;)

Fantastic find! Contrats!

If you hand it into the cops they will give you a receipt and keep it for 3 months. If nobody claims it you can get it back, although that still doesn't constitute ownership. To my way of thinking, if it looks like it has been lost in the last few months then hand it in. If it has been there for 6 months or a year or so then keep it - the chance of anybody reporting the loss to the police after that is very slim and the chance that they have got an insurance payout is very high.

keep it..., its not like there are any owner details engraved on it so how would anyone prove its theirs? I'd imagine that more than one of these was made? Also with an item of this value the owners have most likely lodged an insurance claim and have been reimbursed. well done by the way
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

I agree with this.

And whats to say if some dodgy person reading this site trys to go and claim it from the Police staion with a sob story about a lost gold chain?

Keep it, and good work!

Great going - you will be over the moon. I would be rushing of to buy a lotto ticket while you are having a good luck turn!

I have never ever failed to hand in valuables that I have found and in all instances except one I got them back after three months - the one case was a pay packet and the guy came to give me a reward which I declined - so if I was you I would hand it in.

Once again great going - I wouldnt be surprised if it wasnt long before Goldbugs are Kiwilands most successful and popular all round detector.

can you just say to the police you have found a gold chain at such and such a park. and if some one comes looking for one they can describe it to me as it has only one identifying feature other than gold content .or is this what the police do ?? i wont put the "identifing feature" on here for obvious reason

I recently found a gold item that was nestled in the Kykuyu grass and just on top of the soil.
I decided that if I handed it in I would have a clear conscience and still most likely get it back.
I also found that there is a place on the police form to say it is ok for the owner to contact you
if you wish. That may get you a reward in some cases - maybe. Only 2 months to wait now.

Another gold item recovered was at least 5" down and so I have not put it in as it could have been there for
50 years or more.

Ha fare enough ...but still that was the way it was supposed to be when other treasures were set up i mean sure you have a nice bit of gold there and im not try,n to take the shine of it in anyway but if this is deem to be on here then ya mayswell start putting any gold objects on here and then this will just end up being an extension of...other treasures!

Typically the first find is split with the guy who sold you the detector :)
