Hi all, my name is Scott. I just thought it would be a great idea to say hi and make myself known since Im new to the forum. Ive been hooked on gold since I was about 8yrs old mainly sticking to pan and sluice box.... however my new Goldbug arrived this week thanks to rgmcbrid! I am new to detecting so Im keen to get out and put it through its paces and see how I go. Not expecting miracles though!

I would be definately keen to meet up with anyone in the Dunedin area for tips on the operation of a goldbug and/or if anyone is keen for a detecting buddy drop me a line. I also frequent Central Otago (mainly maniototo) so anyone up there also feel free to be in touch. I enjoy spinning a good yarn, which I must admit there are some excellent stories on this forum.

Lammerlaw you have some amazing reads on here! Two of my favs are 'Relics of the goldfields' due to shooting being an interest of mine and 'Lammerlaws history - On the road to El Dorado' as I know the area up that way reasonably well!

Good luck all

Hi Scott
Welcome to the forum.
Can't help you much with the Goldbug but from my minimal experience with one (minutes) they are pretty easy to use and very comfortable, you've made a good choice.

If you are going coin shooting I can only think of one park that possibly hasn't been hit.
I know the school down Gladstone Rd South has been hit before and if you go there and see a heap of cone shaped plugs.. they aren't mine. The bark playground there had also been hit but I still found $18 in goldies there. I only have a small coil so only hit the 'hot spots' so if you go over a whole park you should find a bit. Best park out that way was Doctors park, for a small park it paid well. The Spiderman park isn't too to bad but has a lot of rubbish which is ironic as it is one of the few parks in the Dunedin district that actually has bins. Chch guys you have it good in that respect, of course you have more people that still choose not to use them.

Remember the big thing is if you dig it, fill it. Heaps of suggestions and techniques on here to stay near invisible.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks Guardian for that info! Total agree with you and everyone else about staying invisible. I also do a lot of trail bike riding and Im one to aim to leave minimal marks, but its those that tear up the place thats causing more locked gates to appear!

Thanks creamer, had the detector out today between showers... must be doing something right, first dig i found a small bullet projectile and second target was the tip of an old fork. Its a start, albeit a pretty crap one haha!!

Have a hunt under your clothes line if you have one. You are almost certain to find something and it's a good way to learn what a good target sounds like in between the rubbish as there is probably going to be coins and peg springs there.

It's those darn V bottle caps that get me and of course a 1c coin sounds (to me) like a deep $2coin, a find is a find it's just one pays for petrol one doesn't!

Trail riding, that is my old poison as well. I don't think there is many (if any) things in life that are better!

Hi Steve

One of the first parks I went to I found $14 and thought I was doing really well. Went back to it the other day and found another $16. The reason was I didn't hunt far enough out from the swings, I usually try about 3-4 metres out now, there seems to be a band where the coins stop and the pull tabs start and if there is too much rubbish I usually stop as with the ATGOLD I can't notch anything out and it becomes pretty taxing on the old noggin.
So always re-hunt your first few parks, I tried this the other day with 4 parks I had recently hunted and found two $2 coins at two different parks so I'm pretty confident I'm doing a good job now.

I have stopped the Lammerlaws History as it didnt seem to attract all that much interest - it was about one third done! After I had gone through to the top of our claim I was going to go onto Part two then a third part which I was going to entitle Sunset on the road to El Dorado as it is possible I might go onto another project...yes it wouldnt be hard to know the area reasonably well but you have to be careful who gives you permission to go where up there when they have no right to give that permission!JY

I dont know how many people would know the area reasonably well as I only ever in all the time I spent up there saw two people together up there crossing overland. It was so secluded that I found two caches of early miners gear under rock shelters and I wonder if anyone knows where the two caves where a person can take shelter are or the overhanging Chinese miners camp site is the Gold mine with a long drive and stamper battery site or the site of the Scheelite mine? If a knows the area even reasonably well then they might reasonably be expected to be able to walk to just one of those places - I wonder just how many people really do know tew area reasonably well?

You wont regret the Goldbug as they are great toys and my son and I have both paid ours off in only a few shorts months and if the truth be known probably in only a few days full time work but spread over the period since we got them.

As for the shooting - I have been into that for years and I daresay my area is totally salivated with lead - in fact a friend of mine with his metal detector has found hundreds and hundreds of bullets shot off by yours truly and cohorts during re enactments of Custers last stand bravely defending the tussock wilderness from invading tin cans

Well when you put it like that I have very little knowledge at all!!! I do know the general locality to a point. Sorry if I may have implied that I have fossicking up there in my original post, this is not the case at all (Naseby is a main area I like to have a pan, hence the name Hogburn). I was actually referring to the time I have spent up there with work as I am a Land Surveyor by trade. I have spent many hours surveying up near the lammerlaws and out the back of mahinerangi, in fact I was up there today doing a small job! One part of my job that I find most interesting is searching/using the old survey plans that were undertaken in the 1860's-1900's. The detail that these plans show is amazing, but what is ever better again is viewing the original document; true works of art.

As for obtaining permission to enter, I totally agree that it must come from the correct person. This is where my job has its perks being able to identify owners, where reserves are set aside, where boundaries are etc. Having a couple of family members with large farms has meant that I have reasonable access to areas that I can have a play. But... the areas are a little like the way you have described yours, showered in lead! This will be a true test of my patience when I get out with the goldbug!
