had a nice afternoon on monday panning at butchers, didnt get any colour at all though. tried the small rapids as well as in behind the large rocks and even dug down to some bedrock. plenty of sign of others but the sandflies were brutal and eventually drove us out haha.
if anyone else was up there on monday we were in a brown subie wagon
just bought the book 'gold in a tin dish' so will have fun reading
cheers - cabbydave

Yeah those sandflies are bastards! I still have small wounds and scars from xmas fossicking around Motueka. I didnt find much either. I think the more effort you put in getting away from the easily reached spots, the better. Plenty of people have had success at Butcher's Flat though so surprising you didnt get at least a few specks.

I have had experiences up thataway with sandflies and also over on the West Coast with mosquitoes - you have two choices - 12 Gauge shotgun or Citronella sticks or oil burners - I recommend the latter, Citronella - the former tends to blast holes in tents, gear and everything else that gets in the way.

Over on the West Coast the former might be more apt as they come bigger!

I'm telling you guys, try 50-50 dettol and baby oil.
works great and is cheap as! Last time by using non brand names cost me $5 all up including a small spray bottle.
Not only does it mask you from the insects but it sure keeps people away as well, so less interruptions!

Worth a shot!

Dave-I was up there on friday sniping-didnt get anything either! Think somebody had been through bfore me though, all the obvious goldy looking spots had been cleaned.

But the best bit about sniping is you dont donate blood to the wretched sandflies!

Hi Guardian and others.

If you want to improve upon the 50/50 dettol and baby oil mix, get a cheap bottle of citronella oil and add a few drops of it to the mix.

Hi guys,
Butchers Flat is a real hit and miss deal, spent many a day up there with little gold.
There is a few realy small good catchment areas that i clean out after a decent flood, apart from that it is hard going,I took a small suction dredge up there seven years ago and spent a day going hell for leather for very little.
There is however some very good catchment within a stones throw of BF.
Steve :)

yep, i love walking upstream where the river tightens up into a small gorge til you come to the claim sign nailed on the tree.
I like going out country just for the scenery and outdoors if nothing else.
some more heavy rain on the way so will wait and see
