That is true...... but when you've got your head down hunting do you really want the interruption ?
I'll stand by it and say it's a double positive ! *8^)

hi ppl im new here to this forum have been looking at this hobby for years lol but never got around to it, my son he is 17 is very keen and thought at some point this year buy a detector whites GMT or GM2 but was thing first trip to Baton, but that looks likes its out now due to the above claim . damn thats always been a fav haunt lol. some ppl are just plain greedy .but anyway i like the look of this forum and any info will be appreciated.been checking out a lot of creeks n rivers before we start and all the equipment that one might need before we start. like the wands for close inspection once the detector has hit anything. but always open to info bye the experts here. thanks in anticipation. it will be a while before we get the gear together, have to pay for our holiday we have just had around the west coast from Te Anau to hokitika omg the rivers all through that area love to live in some of those places.
So at present looking at this site and what it has to offer , so far looking good :-)

I see you mentioning gear and equipment and specifically mentioned 'wands' - my son uses nothing like that and even with the smallest pieces of gold retrieves then in a very short time indeed - I suspect that he would find no need for one of these devices and I certainly dont find a need for them. I have found that even with my old Garrett detector I could very, very precisely pin point coins and I do not believe that in all my years coin hunting with a detector did I ever go so far off course as to damage a coin and I first detected in 1980.

With my Goldbug the other day I found two tiny pieces of gold and I think that if I had a pin pointer then it would not have had the range to find them and therefore a waste of time and also I would have spent as long if not longer with it than I did actually retrieving them using just the detector.

...and yes I have tried them - I dont know the brand of one but the other was a Garrett one and I told the guy he could 'stick it' - I do notice on this site that some people swear by them and thats cool - it could be said therefore that for some they are good but for me they are of no use.

Scorpionking-Mike Reedys claim starts 2-3 hundred metres downstream from the Baton ford and goes basically all the way down to the Mot river. As long as you stick to fossicking above the ford you should be fine.

I'm convinced there is some good stuff still in the upper reaches-just a matter of finding it!
