im not sure yet graham...but i am going to have them looked at..very soon.

Metal kiwi they are being sent away for testing by a professional friend of the guy that wrote the book celtic New Zealand..
they even invited me up to dargerville this weekend to be a part of a doco they are doing up there on a spainish shipwreck..
and at this stage they think they are the genuine thing but as the rest of us wont know until they are anilized..

But again a very interesting find.

I think Graham's spot on with his analysis. Chris very kindly told me the location and I went there with my son yesterday and pulled 7 more coins out of the beach. One was only 2 inches down.

They appear to be thin copper sheets stamped then joined together (think those chocolate coin foils minus the chocolate in the middle) then filled with muck metal (at a guess, lead-zinc alloy as Graham surmised) and then the copper is plated on the outside.

I can't see any reason why genuine coins would be made in such a way, but willing to be proved wrong. :)

I am 99.999% sure these are reproductions. I found one that has glue on it, like it was stuck to a piece of cardboard, and one is a copy of a US coin. I will attach photos of some I cleaned.

Wow Poohbear
That find must have darn near made ya wet ya pants!
Cleaver posting pics - If you go missing we will all know it's a conspiracy
And even smarter to have them tested and make us think they aren't the real deal.

The only problem I see, is now you've had a real taste of excitement how are you going to top that?
Well done and I hope that next big thrill isn't to far away *8^)

hahaha thank you...yes was very excited and still unsure if real or not....some say yes some say no....but am shipping a couple away tomorrow for testing..
my neighbour seems to think they are the real thing as the crustation on them doesnt happen over night..lol..but others that have seen them or have a few say no they are fake...and i am inclind to think fake as well.....but agin still going to get tested to be 100% sure..lol.

but either way it will be very hard to top the excitment of this find.

yes it is very strange....i mean if they were just dumped in one area ok you could say someone threw them there...but to be spread out the way they are along the beach and not just near the top end but right down to the waterline as well and along the beach for quite some distance...it is definatly a mystery.

Probably some metal detector salesman threw them out there in the hopes of starting a treasure hunting rush. ....Not a bad idea come to think of it...

Sounds like they're well spread out. Just head down there Chris and give it a go, and once you report back here, we'll tell you if you're getting warmer. :)

Everytime I go to the beach its bloody windy!
Must give it a go sometime though. Sounds like its a different ballgame than the parks etc though.
Wonder how the F2 does in sand?

I have found that it does quite well in the dry sand but I get a few fake signals in the wet sand :( so I turn the sensitivity down in the wet sand and it does a bit better.
