Well if you see a guy and girl in mid thirties with dark blue mazda car looking silly in a river come say hi......sounds like all you gold fellas arent as friendly as the detectorists?

Had a silly smirk when I read this. First time at Goldsborough on entering the carpark I got razzled by an old guy in a bus, came out yelling at me to slow down. Had just driven from Chch and ok the V6 Bighorn isn't the quietest machine in the world but when you are CRAWLING along in 4wd you don't expect that. It even upset my oldman (a particularly passive man) who suggested we go back later and let his tires down or assist his bus into the river and let him know how much noise that Bighorn could make.

I did the typical stereo type - Old darn fossicker must be protecting his liddle slice and obviously knows something we don't.

Another trip to a near by fossicking area (this time with my wife) we met a couple from Waimate who invited us over to their site for a bbq and we had a great night/early morning.

Just goes to show as in everything ya get good ones and not so good ones and some that like an angry dog ya just feel like prodding with a stick for a bit of easy amusement!

I beg to differ. What it does, having a shallow flow, is that very minor fluctuations in the depth of the water going through will have a disproportionate effect on your boxes ability to clear itself, it doesn't take much for the flow to increase (losing gold) or decrease ( clogging riffles) . I find that you don't have to be so finnicky, mucking around resetting your box. (After tripping face first and smacking it with your shovel lol :) ) If you have it set up deeper, then minor fluctuations have a minimal effect on the boxe's ability to clear itself. (That's just what works for me) , and I don't classify normally, so maybe with classified material you can get away with it..... ) Let the water do the work :)

i agree with nzgold more water if your riffles are correct then you will retain the gold regardless of water
i have from time to time completly blocked of the box with shovel full of sand then just let it run i still get the gold just futher down the box

Cool thanks guys.....we came across a perfect place with real nice flakes but ran out of money, time and....... patience for each other (to put it mildly) lol
We have the next spot well planned and we might even bring the fly for the tent next time so it doesnt cost a fortune to stay a night in a room. We can camp for free as planned. :)
Give us a week or two to save up again and we off. the mrs has gold fever now......she got the first fly shit (well all of it really) in the pan. I got given a wee garnet from the nice prospectors.
The ppl in the bus that were mentioned above but as the old fella was giving me a few trips his mrs yells "hurry up we not here to make friends you know!"......I was so hoping they would need my tools/help for something later but no such luck/carma. ;P
