My experience with the lapidary clubs is that if you ask the right old guys they will not only tell you what it is but also where you got it.

hi goldnut

dont go burning anything unless you know what it is
this peice of gold had mercury around the edge and burned off over a flame. highly poisonous so do it outside.

whereas this piece proved to be a silver nugget, after doing a test that criticol showed me

your photos arent very clear, but just be careful, its not very responsible for someone to tell you to try and melt it, the fumes could kill you if its mercury!, if you are going to try put on a spade and leave it over a flame outside, go away and go back in ten minutes, if its mercury it would have burned off and be no longer present.

THANKS for that! I was about to burn it this weekend... what was the test you used to see if it was silver??? My son touched my lens so any close pics are usually out of focus so I but my eye magnifier on it which helped... but other than that the camera does fine with normal pics... any idea how to clean off the lens? cheers

The late Colin posted me this and it worked, post as below, it helped me hope it works for you.

"Hi Starflash.

Nope! Silver does not dissolve in water!

But Silver can, and does get "Sulphated" which causes it to go Black.

Just stick a piece of Silver into th yolk of an egg, and observe the change to the outer skin?

Also Silver will very slowly dissolve in Sea water, due to the Chlorine in salt water.
This also applies to gold, especially in certain oceans of the world where the salt content is much more highly concentrated. (Salt = Sodium chloride!!!)
I think the "Dead sea" is a case in point.

Hope this helps.

Cheers---Colin"
