I am new to the MD scene but here is my take on it. I believe the SIZE of the shovel/spade is the important thing, regarding public perception. I do want and will get a Lesche, but at the moment I have modified a small shovel (I mean small) approx. 350mm total length and 150mm wide. I carry this in an old towel which I use to place any loose soil onto, the towel helps to conceal the small shovel when walking about. When a target is found the three sided plug is dug while kneeling due to very short length of shovel. Any loose soil is poured into the hole from the towel and the plug flipped over and firmly pressed home. End result a near invisible hole.

After using a putty knife for the last few years I've finally got something better, it's a beast but unless you live in Dunedin where it seems to be raining every 5-15 minutes you would be hard pressed digging any holes tidy at the moment. I was in Oamaru a few weeks back and only went for one hunt as the ground was so crumbly but the bark playgrounds were very easy and rewarding.
