Well done MW. Good story and result for you.

Had a lucrative thought outside the box today at a semi-regular haunt.

Wet sand wasn't producing anything...at all, so had a munchie break and whilst propped up against a Pohutukawa I was looking around and a wee lightbulb flickered into life.

Had to move fast as tide was already about half an hour into the rise but what I could search was both productive and promising.
Got about 30 minutes swinging before I got forced out, although in that time managed some very nice swag.
Absolutely mint 1936 penny, couple of 1940's pennies, and a '33 3d and a '34 shilling. No moderns or ali at all :)
Coins as received and uncleaned - can see the outline of the shilling on one of the pennies where it's stopped the oxidation

Some additional entertainment was provided by the Thin Blue Line as they apprehended a villain on the beach (bag-snatch I think). Very civilised affair really, Mr. Knuckles knew the game was up and went quietly with no more restraint than a guiding hand on the shoulder... Well done, lads.

Got back to the car just in time to get drenched by a downpour that came out of nowhere, but it was a good afternoon.

Getting desperate for a swing while the big machine is out of action, so grabbed the ATP and spent a pleasant evening at Spot W.
Relatively few targets, but worth the junk signals in between holes when first a heavy old silver/onyx ring, then a nice 3.5g 18Ct gold/palladium turned up just after sunset.
The "night-folk" were starting to move so packed up and headed out - I might go back early tomorrow morning while they sleep the grog off.

Swing slow, and work the edges.

First run with Nelly the Elephant coil this morning before work.
Disc'd out everything except the $1/$2 range and set to it in the early morning light.

Pulled about $8 in deeper goldies which I'd missed/couldn't reach before (some were shallow) and then this beauty 1907 penny came up from a solid 25cm. Lovely patina, but as usual the lesche got to it before I saw it...

Also dug a 1985 US cent about 4-5m away - I love the permanence of bronze.

In relic mode today. Couple of places tried including back up my wee stream where I picked up the Cartwheel last year, looked promising with a fork found in the stream gravels on the way in.

Then turned up a huge horseshoe at the site. Must've been a shire or similar. Huge.
Also lifted a cool forged knife, one-piece with a fingerguard 'hilt' built into it. Can see the layers in the blade crossection.
That was it, and after about 90minutes of radio silence, I lost interest and looked for somewhere else.

Added to the horsey theme just down the bank back at the car with a chunk of bridle - modern, with remnants of chrome plate.

Tried another spot, but was all quiet - and after finding what looked suspiciously like an old totara plank marking a grave lurking in a gloomy valley, I decided to move on back into the sunlight.

Ended up on the beach in the end and swapped the AT Pro for the Excal

Eyeballed a hefty claypipe stem, although the one that's got me thinking is a strange lead ball/shot... has the appearance of one inside another. If there are any armourers out there, would appreciate an attempted ID. Diameter 0.46" weighs 133grains.

Back on the beach at Spot W for the afternoon low tide.
Couldn't get enthused to get the wetsuit on, so spent a pleasant couple of hours wandering aimlessly.
Found a nice pocket in a low spot mid-beach...well, THE low spot really, and spent most of the time working it hard.
Turned up a couple of 60's pennies, rotten sixpence and tatty 3d, plus a good pile of around 30 smaller old decimals - nothing larger than 10c which is interesting, no 20's or 50's.
Have had many spoon-cast home made sinkers, but this was my one first cast in a mussel shell, pretty cool.

And a couple of 9k gold rings, one with sparklies were found within 5m of each other, and same sizing so I'm guessing off the same finger.

Damned sand is still hanging around.

Spot T produced the goodies in the rain this morning...
Sand consistently deep along the beach, but spied a wee patch where some cobbles were showing themselves so gave it a go for the usual coppers, 5 and 10cents.
After about 45min of junk decimals, broke the drought with a nice 1943 thruppence, couple of paces away gave up a '34 3d, then shortly after a 1922 penny...then a 1919 Aussie penny...closely followed by a 1915 shilling! All came out of a 10x10m window.

Unfortunately the time-machine didn't quite make it to the magic 1900 mark before drying up, but goes to show that there must be many lenses of coins hidden in beaches around the country, just need those extra few inches of sand to be shifted to gain access.

Spied a spot for a future cunning plan on the way home - can wait for when the weather warms up a bit though.

Since the beaches aren't giving up the goodies easily and the dirt is all swamp, I spent an hour and a half on the rocks with the sniper coil on the ATPro today.
$9 in goldies, one silver ring (India) and a tonne and a half of Grey Matter...

Almost outweighed by the junk!

I can smell gold on the wind though...can't be far away.

Wo theres some spacey digs there. Looks like my last hunt minus the grey matter.
Finding a ring always makes up for it tho.

Mate at work mentioned the German Gold Train yesterday, which I cunningly steered onto detecting - And would he mind if I had a firkle around his garden (since he lives in an older area of town) Turns out the house was only moved onsite in the 60's along with a few truckloads of fill, but I'm always in for new ground, and you never know, eh?

Rocked up today just as he and his wife were heading out, but they were cool with me wandering around the grounds and wished me luck as they drove off. The expression on their faces was the usual "Weirdo..." that we've all seen.

The house takes up about 90% of the small semi-suburban property, with most of the available area either under concrete or house. A thin grassy strip led down one side of the house to the handkerchief-sized lawn at the back.
Determined to make the most of what little dirt there was, I put the sniper coil onto the ATP and set to work with a slow, tight overlap. If anything was there, I didn't want to miss it.

Had iron audio off, there'd be more than a few nails and was only chasing juicy signals.
First up was a 1989 20c, no surprises there. Then a few leadheads and Ali trimmings from a nearby window upgrade around an '86 50cent. I had achieved coinage, so was cheering up a bit after the initial "Why bother" when I saw how little dirt there was.

Lifted a deep 1c just as I got to the gate to the 'lawn'. I say Lawn, but I mean maybe 4x8m of oxalis and very wet, mushy soil. I decided to not dig anything the X-Pointer couldn't see from the surface to avoid making a mess.

Had a quick scan under the deck, couple of tear tabs, but otherwise quiet.
Worked along the drop zone just under the edge where the deck overhung the lawn and got a weird signal. High but jumpy with a few intermittent iron thuds. Signal was scatty no matter which angle. The X-Pointer couldn't see anything but there was something about it. If I find myself repeatedly scanning and listening to a signal it usually turns out to be worth a dig.

I squelched the pointer into the mud and probed around, yep, there it is 3" down and on the tip of the probe. I decided it was worth pursuing.
Did a deep stab and lift which enabled me to slide the fingers in under the groundcover and caught what I thought was thin string between my fingertips. Something metallic might be tied to it so I pulled it out. The 'string' wasn't and I was staring at a silver chain in my palm.

Sent a TXT to my mate, "Has your wife lost a silver chain?". "Yes, years ago". Cool, I'll clean it up and give it to him on Monday.

Carried on around the garden, for a couple of sinkers and a some more old decimals. It didn't take long! So I revisited the areas of the earlier finds, but met with radio silence. There were other signals, but the mushiness of the ground would have made a helluva mess so I left them.

Was just packing the car as they returned from wherever.
Handed his wife the grubby necklace, "It probably looked better than that when you lost it!"

Conversation ensued as to when and how she lost it, about 10yrs ago which would fit the depth.

Then she hands it back to me with, " I haven't missed it, you keep it"

What a nice lady :)

Where there's dirt, there's goodies :)

Un Reale

The original planned hit of the mudflats for the dawn low went a bit astray, and leaky wellies meant relocating to a new spot.
The rock wasn't too deep below the sand and I was hoping for a ring, got a couple of junkers, a 3d and the 'military' button which I'm currently still trying to ID (in the other thread).
Bagged the reale thinking it was a shagged out shilling and wasn't until I tipped the bag out at home that I had a good look.

Wife thought it was "cute", me walking around in circles going, "F... 1778, F... a reale, F..." Hands were shaking and heart was thumping.

What astounds me, is that this was maybe 20m from the road in an area that must've been hammered by swingers over the years.

It was deep.

Yep, 10m below high tide mark on a popular beach...Nowhere near Spain.
Can only assume it was from one of the early whalers/sealers
