First of all welcome!

i would recommend a fisher f2 with either the 11" DD coil or the package that comes with the multiple coils. The reason is that it shows you a number rather than a scale and it gives you a depth read with the number.

Also this machine is good as it is similar to the more expensive minelab...

I Love mine!

Happy hunting :)

Forgot to mention that a pinpointer is an essential as it speeds up recover time by 2-3x!

If your looking for the 11" Coil on the F2, I'd just go for the F4 with 11"

The youtube clip shows air tests but.... that could be very different in soil where the adjustable ground balance would be beneficial - I really should have mentioned that in my earlier post.

Bit of an update, I put my order in yesterday with puiakisupply, they don't have everything in stock but hopefully the F2 will arrive before the weekend and I can get out and start swinging it.

For those interested I fell back from my thoughts of the 11" DD Coil off the bat, I figured that I could start with the stock F2 and use the rest of the money to get a Sand Scoop, Digging Tool and Pin Pointer. And when I get into it a bit more (or collect enough modern coins) I can look at upgrading to the 11" DD and probably a Garret Pro Pointer as well.

Looking forward to getting out there and finding things, I have a couple of spots I'm going to head out to first. One is a park (not very old) that has a fairly large bark play area, flying fox, swings, forts, etc.. I scouted it out the other day and happened across $3 in surface finds as I was walking around, that seemed like a good sign to me. Second spot will be a fairly popular beach spot with a couple of well used access-ways/paths.

I'm feeling lucky, but we shall see how it goes.. It's getting closer..

Thanks to everyone for your input/thoughts/help on this, and a big thanks to Robert at Puiakisupply for putting up with my noobishness!

Also, once I've picked up some basics. I'm keen to find a weekend hunting buddy, or group to join in with and learn from.

Gonna be a long week for you then!
Scoops are expensive but if you want a pretty good one made from alloy (it was tough though) PM Latch.
I've used one of his and it was strong and easy to carry. It was also very well made!

Keep your other location close to your chest as it can be slim pickings there now. I was surprised how little I found last time I was there.

Shame you didn't go for the F4 but hey it's still a solid machine and will pay for itself a bit quicker!

Happy Hunting!

Well, I'm officially part of the gang.. Half of my order just arrived (would've been yesterday but the courier couldn't figure out our gate/intercom) so I have a Fisher F2 and a Digging Tool to play with.

Have spare batteries too, just need to grab a cheap (temp) set of headphones, a bottle of water and a few bits snd pieces from the warehouse on the way out in the morning.

Big thanks to Robert (puiakisupply.co.nz) for his efforts, and kiwi218 if the weather holds I'll find you tomorrow. Though metservice has rain showing for the next few days. :(

I remember that day.....was like Xmas :)
For what its worth, I dont think I find more things or deeper things with the goldbug vs the f2. I'm going to have to join the club of people who think they should have kept their f2 as a backup.
Obviously I bought the goldbug for nugget shooting also but as far as coins go, the f2 is a damn good machine.

I'm happy with coins, don't even have to be old ones.. Anything that shows that this will (eventually) pay for itself is welcome!

I'd be glad to just get out for the exercise for a few hours now and then.. I live in an upstairs apartment block a the moment, so no lawn to go practice on, lots of learning on my first trip out I'm sure..

What do people wear when they go detecting? The Americans (that I see in YouTube, etc) seem to love camo-gear. I imagine just something comfy, and a belt/pouch/etc.

I have a carpenters pouch/belt cheapo that was about $10 at bunnings holds everything I need including screwdriver and probe, torch for night hunts, drop cloth, putty knife, pro pointer and of course it has enough room for trash and keepers.

Gloves really are a good idea, I've just started using a knee pad not really to protect my knee more to stop my jeans from getting wet.

Up till fairly recently we were meeting on a Sunday evening for a drink and detecting talk and then going out after for a night hunt. It seems to have dropped off recently but I'd be keen to meet up same time same place this month if everyone else is interested.

Specially as I now have a machine with backlight!!!!

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

When and where is this? I'd be quite interested in coming along, maybe more experienced hands can tell me if I'm doing it right/wrong, lol.
