Bedrock is the bomb! But flood layers can hold significant amounts of gold. As I go through flood layers; the clay or false bedrock can be packed. I get pumped but 90% of the time when I get to the bottom there is zero gold. The early miners cleaned out the bedrock and then modern floods replenished the gold supply in flood layers.

Hey, thanks everyone for having me here. I'll probably never understand why I do better at bedrock when the flood layers aren't gold bearing but It seems to be the case. This is a pic of a 10 gram piece I pulled out of clay a few feet above bedrock this past October. When I did get to bedrock there was nothing. On the other hand when I start working my way down and don't see anything in the overburden I have found I have a better chance of finding good gold on the bedrock. I don't know..... It seems ass-backwards

thats a sweet chunk. yes it is weird, i know of streams where small gold is all through the pack with no real concintrations in bedrock cracks whereas others have nothing in the pack but good larger gold in cracks only with no fine gold to be seen anywhere.

weird!

Like they say gold can be found anywhere.
10.5 gms snipeing last week at ......... on the coast,Biggest piece 2.5gms & 4gms of the smaller stuff.
UserPostedImage
Only a few small pieces were found in a shallow pack but the 2.5gmer was also found in the pack, then the rest of it was stuffed all along a bed rock gutter running at about 20 degrees across the stream, most enjoyable sucking it all up.
The biggest thing I find is until you get your head underwater you just dont know what to expect, the most promiseing looking bed rock sections can be barren & another area that looks as if the bedrock may be to smooth turns out to have a pickle barrel in it stuffed with gold or as Ronincolin said has a good clay pack in there holding all the good stuff.
"You just dont know untill you go"

Good Work Buddy.
It’s no good saying “Keep it up”, because I know you will!!!

Nice clean Gold too, I hope you get lots more of that.

Hi Eagle,

That's an awesome haul you have there. I know better than to ask you the location, but... was it somewhere easy to access, or did you bush bash a long way in? How long did it take you to get to the spot?

Just curious how much effort people are putting in to get to locations ;)

Gav :)

nzgold,Starflash,Criticol cheers fellas.

"Gav" some spots that I do & have done have literally been straight out from the truck or within a five minute walk but unfortunately when they are done its game over & off to a new spot either upstream or down stream.

This particular spot requires some effort it was a combination of bush bashing & walking the creek to get in there, approx 1hr walk.

I wear a 9mm suit top & bottom whether its summer or winter & if the walks not to far I will suit up right away.
If its a long walk, & summer time or not to cold, shorts & tramping boots are sweet & I will get changed when I am at my starting spot. While sniping I wear my tramping boots over the top of my 5mm booties great for walking upstream & protection from boulders that you move instream while sniping.
If its winter or cold ugly weather I will wear light weight breathable waders(fly fishing styles) bush bashing & walking the watercourse & get changed into my wettie at the starting spot.
This is just a comfort thing as she can get very very cold down these ways, especially around winter & spring. Some of the canyon creeks barely get any light in them even at the height of summer,so getting wet means getting cold & after 4,5,6,7 hours in a freezing stream & a hour long walk or more to get out & darkeness quickly aproaching its a saftey thing really.

A head torch & emergency thermal blanket in the pack is always a good thing too carry just in case.

Some times the big missions pay off & sometimes not.But I always say "untill you go you dont know".

Cheers for that Eagle - especially the gear run-down. Just starting to think about upgrading from my surf wettie for these missions and you've given me some great tips!

Cheers JW.Have you been getting onto anything of late??

There is a nice high pressure system over us at the moment, until about Mon so I am looking to get a couple days sniping in while the rivers are still low, mind you, woke up this morning to a small dusting of snow from the South East on the tops across from home,so water temps will be coming down.

Of course this thread wasn’t hi-jacked ---It couldn’t have been, COULD IT?
Who would do a thing like that to deliberately promote their Superior prospecting achievements and/or techniques, or themselves to others that are a little less fortunate in this skill?
