I found a very very old round coin on the place cook first landed in the firth of thames,i have done a lot of research on this coin, also taken it to a collector to try and identify it, apparently its a roman coin of between 200-700ad

As mentioned early on in this thread my earliest coin is an 1834 William iv silver sixpence. What i really would like to find is a penny that predates 1900. The best ive managed so far is a 1908 UK penny.

Funny I found the same coin and year at Hagley Park a couple months back, the 1816 is the rarest date as they changed the bull head George to a slimmer version in 1817 due to public disapproval, I think old georgie was going a bit mad at that time.

Opps mine was a Half crown

My oldest coin found is an 1884 one penny. Found up in the hills in the facinity of an old gold mining camp with my old Garrett Treasure Ace 300 before I got into gold detecting with specialised gold detectors.

Sam Marsden dropped it on the way to Waimate North from the Stone Store where he had
been given it in change after paying for potatoes.

That would fit, (this is a 1 reale after Ferdinands reign).
I found a reference elsewhere to British colonies using Spanish silvers, so in the days when money was actually worth its weight that would make sense.

Thanks for the link.

Hi Guys

There are a few good books on European trade with NZ well before 1840.

One covering Northland is "From Tasman to Marsden" by Robert McNab 1st published in 1914.

Cover Cook in 1769, Du Surville in Doubtless bay 1769, Marions visit to Bay of Islands in 1772,
Stray visitors 1773-1793, 1st timber trade 1794 -1801, and several others up to Marsden in 1814.

220 pages but amazing info.

Another of McNabs is "Murihiku" 1st published in 1909.

This covers the bottom of the South Island and lots of info on explorers, sealers, whalers, Flax industry, from about 1776 - 1820. Real good history in this one.

He also did "The Old Whaling days" published in 1913 which covers Otago, Cook Strait and Bay of Islands from about 1790 - 1840

I've got each of the above but they come up from time to time on Trademe .

Hope this is of help for anyone interested in pre 1840 trade in NZ.

Awesome mate........righto, they're now on my wish list!

By the way, if anyone is after any WW1 books, I have a massive collection (2000 +) that I am looking to thin out, including some pretty rare stuff including first editions etc.... If you have a specific title you want, I may have it.
Just PM me and I'll have a look.

Cheers, No8.
