you will be very lucky to find a nugget up there without spending a week or more. i went up last weekend and detected for over 8 hours and it looks like the place has been hammered lately, i only found a led head nail and a square old nail was very dissapointed, it needs a big flood to replenish the ground.

went to shamrock creek for a couple of days. didnt get a thing. dam good weather though. apparently the area has been given a good thrashing over the past few months. i see there is a claim in for the area directly above the fossicking area on the waimea creek too. claim no. 54153

Hi There,

Anyone want to go for a trip next week? 20th May.

Or hire a decent metal detector?

100-300 for the week depending on detector quality and will give bond/licences etc.

Thanks,

Hamish

Hi, I am quite new to detecting but have found a couple of small nuggets in the Moonlight area. Not in the rivers though, but perched on the sides where the bedrock is exposed. It seems to me that unless you are within detector range of the bedrock in rivers (not too covered in gravels) the chance of finding a nugget is even less. I've found with that area that the deep moss/humus in the forests also restricts detecting. In saying that I hope to be back in that area detecting before too long. Some interesting water races etc there to see before nature takes back. It will be thrashed I'd say within an easy walk, perhaps off the beaten track a bit? Cheers, Ian

It seems like a pretty popular spot......there were lots of cars/campers there when I was there last also but few people could be spotted.
