BTW: Don't chuck that black sand out - there's still some gold in it ;)

Just back from visiting Daniel who sells gold gear. Was experimenting with a spiral recovery wheel for separating gold from black sands. Pulled some gold out of the black sands I kept for myself.

Cough hack. Is the spiral recovery wheel at your place right now? :)

i've seen one of those wheels in action. not cheap so you would need to be losing an awful lot of black sand to make it worth it. or simply just hate dealing with black sand.

if you're dealing with fine gold only you need one.

if you have chunkier stuff and not so much black sand prob not worth it.

not sure what its processing rate is but its only really for cleaning up concentrates off a dredge or hand sluice.

as gavin mentioned theres always gold in the black sand. if you've been careful hopefully not too much.

i don't want to think about the gardens i filled with black sand at houses i used to live at.

i now reprocess fine gold in black sand a couple of times thru a little plastic sluice that has recessed riffles built into the plastic.

eventually it gets to the point you just have to accept its not worth your time to recover every last flour sized particle of dust gold. you're better off out finding more bigger stuff.

Nah, it was at his showroom he's set up just outside Rangiora. A bit of an Aladdin's Cave! :) Someone over the west coast had bought one off him and was stoked with it. Apparently a lot of the garnets recovered using it as well are getting used in jewellery by his mother I think Daniel said. I was just helping him have a play with the demo model to see how it all went together.

I agree with Simon - probably more for people that have a lot of material to process i.e. dredgers. Was quite impressed to see it in action though - I had low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw it in action. Was interesting watching the few flakes of fine gold that had been missed making their way towards the trap at the center of the spiral. Those black sands had been thoroughly panned before. Probably good for Daniel and his clients as takes a lot of time to pan the huge amounts of black sands they end up with.
