With the huge range of coils available for the minelab PI's depth can also be pretty massive. I found a little brass button about the size of a 5 cent piece at over 600mm deep. I was so sure it was going to be gold but alas it wasnt. That was with a 12" X 15" mono coil.
What PI are you using Karl?

Hi JW
Sorry for the delay in replying - between work and a nasty bout of flu I haven't had much time or enthusiasm for hobbies during the past fortnight. Definitely wouldn't sell the PI (currently a Minelab GPX 4800) for all the reasons you describe, but as mentioned in a previous post weight is a factor at the moment and frankly there are some places where it's just a little too bulky to swing with ease.
How about you - what PI are you wielding?
Hi Karl, Yer that flu is real stink aye. I caught the fregin thing from the air conditioning on flying back to QT from up "home". Floored me for 3 days & felt like shit for another two weeks & still have a niggling coff.
Getting back to the thread at hand. I take it you use the bungy cord that hooks on to your harness to take the weight?? I also use a hip stick when swinging larger coils. Absolutly brilliant, as you can swing a big coil all day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PmFO7WSOMA I also made up a swing arm that attaches to the lower shaft & that makes it even earier.
http://www.billandlindap...cting.com/swingarm1.html Why did you get a 4800 & not the 5000?? I have been told that the 4800 was made more for the European market & more as a coin/relic detector hence it is minus a few bells & whistles that the 5000 has for gold. Although it is still ok for gold but not as good as the 5000.
Happy hunting
JW :)
